Hey guys, Looks like my second turn signal relay is going out the door on me within the last few months, I have not cracked the bulb housings open to check grounds and connections to them yet, but this is beginning to worry me. When I checked the old flasher unit on my other bike it came up shot and I had a spare and it looks like this unit is going out the same way- the front bulbs still work but when I trip the flasher on either side no flashy, the bulb temporarily goes out on the side I switch it to but no flash. Could a possible bad ground be causing my flashers to go south? I thought these units were fairly bulletproof. Opinions, help always appreciated.
I replaced mine on the '87 recently because it was doing the same thing. Very sporadic. It would work fine and then just suddenly on the highway when I went to change lanes....nothing. Happened several times before I changed it out. I think the old thermal type flashers just get temperamental as they age....especially on a bike where they are exposed to heat, vibration, etc over the course of many years. I replaced mine with an aftermarket generic solid state/electronic type and its all good. Steady blinking regardless of voltage and instant on. Also replaced the original on my old CB550 long ago. It was very sensitive to low voltage. As you know, the charging system on the old CBs is adequate at best.....mine would blink slow as a snail at idle most of the time. Electronic flasher to the rescue. Problem solved.
Mine would work fine for months and then stop, I took it apart cleaned the points, made a new case from a printer catridge, it worked fine for 6 months then quit a minute later works again. I put a spare in and fine so far. They're iffy.
