Hello everyone, quick background; I have been riding for years, but I took a hiatus and started again with a Ducati 900 SS. I love the bike, but it is just too uncomfortable for long rides, which I am beginning to do more and more.

So any help would be nice. First of all , my budget is around the 2002 model. Is there any significant difference between 2002 and say 2004 etc. I can afford one with pretty low miles.

Secondly, the most important thing for me is leg position, my Duc killed my legs. I am 6' 1" and have pretty long legs. Anyone with a challenging inseam?

Since it is a Honda, I am sure the engine is dependable. Any red flags I should look for when purchasing?

    Thanks in advance.

From my knowledge, there is no difference between the 02 and 04...maybe different fueling if anything, but I don't think so. Either model will have to be checked to ensure that it has had the wiring harness recall done. If the mileage is over 16k, ask if the valve check was done....it really doesn't need one based upon how rare they are out of spec, but it may be bargaining power for you. Also, see if they had had any regulator/rectifier issues.

BTW, several folks on here are 6'3" or taller...no problems whatsoever from them....you could install helibar and an aftermarket sargent seat (or corbin) would help for soreness from long rides.

As Derstuka said there are no different. The only different is on 06 the Vtec kick in at 6500 RPM instead at 6800. Good luck on your bike shopping.
BTW I love the VFR, Total my 05 and pick up another 06/09 in five days.

Some model numbers of 2002 VFR's also suffered alternator/stator output issues. There was a recall performed on the affected model numbers, but that ended in October 2007...........

The front lighting sub harness was redesigned and installed as another recall item on these machines, as far as I know this recall is still currently being performed.

2002 vs 2004...no difference. I am 6'1", 220lbs and I have modified my VFR for comfort. I have Heli Bars and a Sargent seat, and other mods as well. Some people have installed lowering links. However, that will limit your ground clearance on steep leaning curves.

If you got a good price on a 2002, go for it. You can't go wrong with the VFR.

I had a problem with the linked brakes. Some rubber bushing failed. When my mechanic got the replacement, he said honda told him it had been redesigned. You might want to see if the bike you purchase qualifies for this replacement before it leaves you without brakes (like mine did at about 35k mi.)

This was my only mechanical failure in 60,000 miles of hard riding.

Also, just had the valves measured for the second time at 55,000 miles... everything still in spec.

Good Luck. You're choosing the right bike.

Just ride it, your days in the Ducati world are over  I've put this bike through it's paces since I bought it. 3 or 4 track days, several thousand mile tours/weekends and countless 300 mile days. Not one issue mechanically. Now electrical....that's another story.

As others have said, get the wiring harness recall done just to be sure. You never know. My buddy has an 03 with 36,000 miles on it and not one problem. I have an 03 that left me sit when it had roughly 15,000 miles on it. Unfortunately I was in West Virginia on day 1 of a 10 day tour. That was a fun ride home!

I bought my '03 19 months ago now, only had 2400 miles on it when I bought it. I'm sure you can find a low mileage bike out there.

    Good luck.
