My 2002 VFR 800 just recently got this problem. About a week ago I tried to start it up and this horrible sound appeared and the bike was unable to start. Now yesterday I actually got the bike to start by putting it down into first and after only two tries it started up fine for me. I still would love to find out what the source of this problem is. Thank you!

Where is that noise coming from? Has the wiring recall been performed? Call dealer to verify if you don't know. If the noise is coming from behind the instrument cluster then there are some relays behind the cluster and that's what it sounds like to me. The relays chattering. This could be a the relay itself or a wiring issue, especially if the recall hasn't been performed.

Agreed MrSleep, that sure does sound like a malfunctioning relay to me too.
I'm thinking it's prolly gonna be either the engine stop relay or the fuel cut-off relay.
Since it's making a loud noise it should be fairly easy to identify which one it is.

Here's a pic of where to find those two relays Binary.
