I have a 01 vfr with a m4 exhaust and after seeing the price for a stock air filter i chose to purchase a k&n filter for 10dollars more. Measured the amount of filter material and found the k&n to be smaller. Will this affect my bikes performance and one last ? for those who own a k&n filter; the airbox will not completely seal because of the wall thickness of the k and n correct? It seems sealed with the filter itself though so it should not hinder performance correct?
If I were you I'd return the filter and get the BMC air filter because its a perfect fit and does a better job than stock.
I have an '01 with the K&N. If I remember correctly. there is a stock rubber seal in the air box housing lip that needs to be removed and the airbox will seal just fine. I'm very pleased with the K&N, I have them on my Fiance's PC800, my truck and my boat, as the size of filter area doesn't matter due to it's free flowing design. However, if you want to take the advice to get a BMC I have a brand new one I'd sell you cheap!
I had stuck a K&N in my 4th gen and the filter area matched exactly the stock. On my 5th gen I bought a K&N again and noticed the reduced area. I called the tech guys over there and they said that they did it this way to match stock flow. -- Well I didnt buy an aftermarket filter only to have perform as stockish. Sold it and bought the BMC because it covers the complete opening = more flow than stock. I knew I was gonna screw with damn near everthing possible related to the engine so I wanted to grab more flow. MD
