After owning my VFR for well-nigh two weeks I've spent most of my time going from traffic jam to traffic jam... dang, somehow I forgot about those, not having a motor vehicle since 1980-something.

My question: Does anybody have a definitive source of key blanks for a 2001 VFR? My local Honda dealer ordered two since the book said the 2001s had two different keys and he couldn't tell which was the right one.

Neither was right... my key is about a third longer than both of them. He was flummoxed, I am flummoxed.

Having only one key makes me nervous... any assistance would be appreciated.

Try a locksmith. Some will want to see paperwork showing the bike is yours. Title-registration ect.

A good locksmith will have blanks. Take your key too..

All this stuff is coded and numbered. I think you might find the locksmith is also a hell of a lot fewer bucks than your dealer.

I've got a 2000 vfr, and I think the keys are the same type as the 2001. I had a similar situation where I thought I was down to one key.

Back in late December I thought I lost my key (found it in late Feb) and was using my spare from the PO (obvious copy /no honda logo). So with all the hearsay about dealer costs for replacements, the trouble to get the key code etc, I ended up doing the following:
Found a blank supplier on ebay (see links below). I bought 2 of the packs of 2 (4 total blanks) for $24.
Found a local locksmith in Allston, MA. Since I had the blanks already, he only charged me $2 per key. I made 3 copies and kept the 4th blank. So $30 for 3 spare keys (could have been $32 for 4 copies).
To be honest, the first copy the locksmith made was sketchy and wasn't easy to start in one direction (i.e. if the ignition seems stuck, flip it over and it works great). He moved to a different machine when he made the next two copies and they work flawlessly. I think the old man just had skill and wisdom and could 'see' why the first attempt was not quite right. Then he only charges $2 per copy.
