When I picked up my '85, the seat was in pretty decent shape. But the vinyl was cracking and getting worse every time I rode. As long as the seat needed recovering, I decided I would add some extra padding because the seat was killing me on 50+ mile rides.

I ran to Joanne Fabric after the wife and I finished our 100mile cruise yesterday. Both of our tails were hurting pretty good. I picked up enough black vinyl for two attempts at recovering the seat. I didn't have the courage to try red or white. The fabric and extra foam cost me a few pennies under $30.

I used my fish fillet knife to cut and sculpt the foam. 2" on the saddle and 3/4" for the wife or some random girlfriend if I find one along the road.

Here is the final product. I loose a bit of the dip over the saddle and I think that cuts out on the sporty look. But no one sees that while I'm riding it. Took a short ride today of about 12miles; wasn't enough to give a good report but it did kind of feel like the boys were sitting on their own cushy pillow. The vinyl is stretching more and I've already been able to pull it a little tighter over the saddle, creating more of the dip you see in a stock seat. I'll get it streched a little more and with another set of hands it'll pull tighter down over the front of the saddle just behind the tank.

You're going to hate it. Too high in the front, nothing to stop you from riding right up on the tank. Also, noithing to grip your butt.

My suggestion. Remove OEM foam altogether and repalce with 1 layer carpet foam, 1 layer upholstery seat foam and one layer green. Cut to shape to hold your butt with a incline towards a step at the tank. Sit and retry cut, cover.

If it works for ya well done. If not you can keep playing with it without too much loss now that you know what your doing.

The key to comfy butt is distribution not just more foam. It looks like you have more of a crown in the middle. That's a ride breaker for sure. You want a wide pan for the cheeks. You can sit on a wide wooden chair much longer than a padded fence rail. You want your butt to take all your weight not the "boy's". The foam is important as well. Some foams will simply crush leaving you with no extra support. A good closed cell is nice.

A couple good points from a couple guys here. I'm not making any changes until I ride on it a bit and see how it feels but I'll be coming back to these if I decide I'm not happy with it.

Great link! Covers most of the bases. Lots of difference in different cover materials. Some of the "vinyls" from fabric stores are not suitable for outdoor exposure.

Three layers of new foam is right on.

Yep - the fabric store had 3 types of vinyl that all looked alike. The one I took was for outdoor use, mold resistant, suggested uses: marine seats and outdoor chairs, also resists cracking down to -10F

Allsport Vinyl is easy to stretch and fit and weather proof, a guy on Ebay has it.

I think my seat rocks and you guys are just haters.

Jealous of my comfy cushy seat on my sporty bike with the full fairing.

It feels like a super comfy pamper time floaty throne
