Has anyone replaced their factory rear shock with something else? And do you like it? Or has anyone had their factory shock rebuilt, and can recommend someone?

1992/93 seems to be an bad year for upgrades.

    Thanks
    Robert

    93 Shock

There are still soome options for new shocks.

    Hyperpro

    Penske

    Maxton

    Elba

And a few sites still list the Ohlins HO002 as available, at least they list a price.

Lindemann will rebuild yours and you can get a new spring. Or yo can get inventive.

I've modified several CBR929RR shocks to fit the 3rd generation VFR's with really great results. The shocks can be purchased on eBay really cheap and the modification is only $175, so dollar for dollar it's a great upgrade. Below is a picture showing a modified CBR929 shock (without the spring installed) next to a stock 90-93 VFR shock. Feel free to PM me if have any questions about it.

Another great shock is WP it rivals Ohlins IMO, how do I know? I have one. Not to make you feel bad, an Ohlins for a 93 just sold on ebay, so they do come up now and then.

I have a similar question. Just bought a 1993 VFR750F and would like to change the shock out that would lower the bike.

I need to lower my 1993 VFR 750F. Does your modification lower the bike at all?

It can, but not much. Most people want it raised a little. How much do you want it lowered and why?

WP on my 91. If your monoshock is the original, it's likely shot. The WP is rebuildable and adjustable. Last I looked WP, will rebuild thiers for $125.00

Teardown and install is relatively easy. If you do this, have someone set it up for you that knows what they are doing. A good place to look is at a roadrace.

    Don't forget your forks too.

Regarding shock options for a 93, I was going to look into getting a WP shock and here is what they said..

    This was on 12/17/2009

    "Many thanks for your enquiry.

Unfortunately WP are not building shocks for your bike at the moment and it is not confirmed whether production will continue either I'm afraid. The factory has recently moved from Holland to Austria and production is not up and running yet.

    Kind regards,
    WP USA"

That's not an uncommon response. Manufacturers like WP will not make shocks for that old of a bike forever. In fact, that's not completely true - they will still make one but it will cost a pretty penny. For example, Ohlins or Penske would be happy to make you a shock for the one-time low, low price of $1400+.

Here is what Came from GMD Boston 12/18/2009

Here is a reply from Peter Kates to my inquiry about a rear shock.

"I can get you a Penske before the end of the year if you like, Price on the 8983 is $787.50 and the 8987 is $1075.00 Build time is about a week.

I have also looked into the Shock on Ebay, lots to research.

    Thanks for the input.

Those really aren't bad prices. Just make sure they include a valving setup for your weight and not just a spring change. It's not uncommon for dealers to use a "standard" valving setup and only swap out the springs as needed for different rider weights. Without the correct internal valving the shock won't achieve the best performance.

There only so many choices but I knew working on a 3rd generation would be a challenge to find the parts. A few "non-gear head" types have asked "Why"... I just answer, "You would not understand".

Thanks for the feed back Jaime, I thought the prices were reasonable but a $200 or so difference between what you have quoted me means I have to sacrifice something down the line if I get a new shock. I do have a 929 shock to send you just incase.

Well, there's an Ohlins 929 shock on Ebay for ONLY $1023. Add Jamie conversion fee and you have the most expensive 93 shock in the world. Now there's an idea.

Maybe you can find an Ohlins TTX rear shock - then you would be over $1500!
