Need your expert advise! 1990 VFR 750
I have installed the following OEM items: Slave Cylinder & Clutch assemly (friction & steel plates, springs) exactly as specified in the shop manual... Initial startup and clutch engagement is ok, however, when the machine is at operating temperature the clutch begins to slip to the point where it cannot engage from a dead stop... (ps...I do not get on it so to speak so there is not any issue of abuse)
    thank you!

sounds like the stack is out of order. Did you use new or used plates/friction ?

other thing to try on hyd clutches is loosen the the slave cyln so you have a strong 1/8" between the cylnder and enginge, pump clutch lever a few times and retighten.

Your problem could be hydraulic or mechanical.

Can you shift to neutral easily from 2nd gear?

Will the engine rev up but not pull any harder?

Clean the clutch MC paying particular attention to the small fluid return hole......

The overall thickness of the plate stack you installed may be less than stock setup or springs are too weak.....

Did you change your oil and filter when doing the clutch ?

All new OEM steel plates, friction plates, jutter spring and springs. The stack position is exactly the same as the shop diagram.

I replaced the stack stock setup with the same stack of new OEM equipment.

40K miles. the original problem? I bought the bike with the following problems:
The Clutch Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder were inoperative--- We Rebuilt the Master Cylinder and replaced the Slave Cylinder.
The problem of clutch slippage occured thereafter. I checked out the original clutch and found some wear---but nothing significant except for some discoloration on the steel plates. Then i purchased new OEM friction plates, steel plates, jutter spring, and new springs.
Clutch basket wear?? Both the original stack setup and the new stack setup fit well into the basket---i did not see any damage on the basket that would allow loss of contact...

THE slots around the basket normally get dented during use, develop notches and can hang up plate movement if worn too badly.

IF that's the problem ypu can use a file to even out the dents, but it takes time.

If anything went wrong with the clutch mc rebuild it could be holding hydraulic pressure even when you're not squeezing the lever, and that would cause slippage.

I mention basket wear because your bike is old enogh to have had an older Barnett clutch in it and they were very thin where they contacted the basket and were prone to wear and cause all kinds of problems like this.

Before installing the clutch pack, did you soak the clutch plates overnight in the engine oil that you are using?

Just out of curiosity, what type of oil are you using?
