Hey, I have been keeping an eye open for a good deal on another used VFR (perferable a 4th Gen), and I have found a 1987 VFR 700 (51k mi - price 1800) really cheap. I am interested in the bike, but I do not like riding on 16in Rims. Has anyone with a VFR700 changed to 17in Rims and are any suspension modifications advised. Also, how hard is it to get parts of an older 1987 VFR. I also have an eye on a 1990 VFR750 (30k mi - Price 3k), which is also in very good condition.

It appears to already have a 17" rim on the front, looks like an F2 rim. I can't see the rear rim in the pic, but stock size is 18" on the rear, if you where to go w/ a 17 out back you would have to make up the difference (1/2") w/ the shock either by modifing it or getting a fox twin clicker to maintain proper stance. Parts aren't ridiculously hard to find yet, may require more effort than a newer bike but most everything can still be had or replaced w/ something different/better( ie. Mirrors are no longer made, but Puegot Speedfight mirrors are better replacements they are only available across the pond though). For this bike w/ 50K, the non stock paint, the questionably modified side panels I'd see if you could get it for $15-$1600.

If it make you feel better the 87' supposedly has a better rear stock shock than the 86'. How much better I can't say, also on the front a fork stabalizer would be recommended, could go w/ progressive springs but I don't think that is recommended w/ the TRAC system. Could alway put a CBR F2 complete front on it as well.

    Hey T-Bone,
I would have to agree with you and i would be interested in the damage on the side panels, and that price also would depend on how far away from you it is ? i must say i like the rims
