I am wondering if any one could tell me a good source for tires? Also is it necessary to get bias-ply or will radials do it too?

Stock wheels are not wide enough to fit radials, and hence, prob won't find radials in the correct sizes. Bias ply it is.

I have used jakewilson.com with good luck and pricing. I bought a fresh set of Metzeler Lasertecs for my '83. I have been using them since 1984, the were the hot tire at the time. Now they are one of the few that make a good 16" front tire. Still love them.

    Dobi,

I went with new Battlax BT45V's this summer. I could not find Metzler Lasertech as a matching set. I had one on the front since 1998. Very good tire, 120/80. The rear was a 140/70 Battlax. I went with a 110/90 on the front and a 140/70 again on the rear. The bike feels very nimble after they get hot. Rocky Mountain ATV has very good prices and ship almost instantly. They were at my door the next day but I am only 180 miles from Salt lake City.

Thank you all for the quick replies. I got a few more questions. How long do tires usually last? The ones that are on it have a date code 188. Apparently it was sitting for a long time since the odometer shows only 3200 and it appears to be true after some research. Also what would be the widest tire possible for the rear without modification. I like to keep it the way it is, still original.
    Thank you all.

I have a 160 k comp on the back of my 86. It's been on there since 2003... I'd be interested in hearing about the life of these. Mine has low mileage.

You have a 160 on a stock VFR wheel?

Yeah, but I have less than 1/4 inch room from the brake stay. I'll double check in the morning to make sure I'm not mistaken.

IMO.......largest rear tire for the stock rim shouldn't be more than a 140.

A 160 tire would be a serious disimprovement.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about clearance. It's putting that size tire on that rim. The profile of the tire is messed up. I agree with Squirrel, the widest I would put on is a 140/70.
