To me, it's a collector. I like smaller displacement bikes and 400 cc has always seemed a good size. I like the FZR 400 also. A nice little screamer. If you can get it for a decent price, I'd go for it. You could probably race it in some special classes at the track. Some of the less crowded boards.

i'm just interested to know how the bike handles in general and how reliable is it?
I'm in the market for my first bike and i came across this VFR 400R with 8000km on it. I know nothing much about bikes so if any of the VFR owner can enlighten me about this 1st gen. of VFR would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Cool bike and very collectable but parts will be an issue. I don't think they were ever imported here by Honda so all of the bikes here will be grey market imports.

Could be a bad choice for a first bike if it were to break. If it stays reliable, which I believe that they are, you will have a great time. They were said to be one of the finest handling bikes ever produced.

I really like the New Play Station TT game that has a VFR400 on it and she handles like a dream!!

I am fairly certain that the VFR400 shares, most engine bits, trans, and clutch with the VFR500. which you can get parts for... But check out Bikebandit.com or call a Honda dealer and check with them.. I have a VFR500, and it is PLENTY quick, but the power is very managable even for a new rider the power comes on smooth as the revs climb.... the VFR400 should be the same. But if basic maint parts are not available. (brakes, electronics, clutches..etc ) I would steer clear of it as a first bike.

The vfr400 is available in many guises the most popular being the nc30,this was imported to the uk for 2 years and most parts are readily available in the uk. My kid brother has raced one for the last season amd matches many of the 600cc lap times at the twistier tracks. This bike shares no parts with any other model in the Honda range basically being an RC30 that shrunk in the wash. They are bulletproof with the engine being an absolute gem (78hp in mild tune anyone) If is clean and tidy buy it! it'll teach you more about riding in a weekend than a bigger bike would teach you in a year.

Sorry if this sounds pedantic but to my knowledge there never was a vfr500in the uk we got vf500 which is chain driven cams. Fantastic bike but not a vfr. I'm quite happy to be corrected!

I assume you are replying to me.. You could be correct.. I am not sure what the difference between the VF and VFR was.. Here in the US I was under the impression that any of the Interceptors were VFR's.. I do believe that the official model was called VF500.. Here all the V4's in all the models had chain driven cams until 1986.

Also I was checking on Bikebandit.com... and the VF500 is not listed.. only 500 Magna.. But the engine, trans, clutch, and I think the electrics are the same.

Have fun.. be safe out there.

Sorry about not replying to you directly, I didn't mean to come across as a know all, it's just that i've been involved with VFR Honda's for the best part of 20 years and i relish the chance to fill in any gaps in my knowledge. The VF500 and magna 500 are essentially the same bike, we got a magna 750 in the uk which used all the engine and electrics from the 750 interceptor.

    Take care.
