1986 VFR 750 Rear Shock

I am looking to buy a new shock. I have a stock setup with wheels and tires. I noticed the '87 shock is longer than the '86. Is it acceptable to put a longer shock on the rear without any other modifications? Is there a benefit to a longer shock? Or should I stay with the stock length. I am currently looking at a hyperpro and a works performance. I appreciate any info you all may have.
