I am in the process of replacing the stator on my 86 700, the rotor refuses to come off, I cannot get a puller between the rotor and the engine case to get any kind of pull on it. I have also tried a pice of pipe screwed into the crank shaft, nothing seems to be working. Anyone know if there a tool or a trick to remove the rotor. Running out of ideas,

    thanks

There is special tool you need to do that. I'm guessin' that one is a hardened bolt with a 'shaped' end to push on the end of the crank without bunging it up. The easiest and cheapest (unless you can borrow one) way to do it is try to get one aftermarket from a distributor catalogue such as dealers and accessory shops carry. The OE one is better quality...but also more expensive.

Hint...As you're tightening the puller if the flywheel doesn't 'pop right off (catch it now!) try a couple of sharp strikes with good deadblow hammer on the 'head' of the puller. Last resort is heat, which you want to apply CAREFULLY in that area...I would use a heat gun...sometimes it's amazing how much easier tapered fit stuff comes apart when it's nice and toasty. You probably won't have to resort to that though, usually engine flywheels come off pretty easy.

thats seems to be the problem, the engine case is up around the rotor and I cannot get the arms of the puller on the edge of the rotor to get any kinda of pull, there is threads inside the rotor that I have tried a half inch piece of pipe to try to push the rotor off, however this just tears up the threads on the pipe,
Does anyone know what size the threads are on the inside of the rotor and hopefully the thread pitch, I am gonna try to find a metric bolt with the correct size and thread pattern to hopefully get this rotor to come off, or if someone can tell me if there is special tool and where to buy it that would be gr8t...
    thanks

Im about to do the same thing on my 87. If its anything like the last stator I pulled in my yamaha youll need one of these harmonic balancer pullers. Your local auto parts store should have them for around 20 bucks.

LINK: While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com

Dont quote me on it, I havent cracked open the side case to take a look at the flywheel yet but im pretty sure its the same.
