Its best to try keep the same type that was last put in. I was in your shoes 3 weeks ago but couldnt find out what the previous owner was using. The climat you ride in can affect the decision of what oil your gonna use.But if your in michigan its kinda the same temperature as me. Im using 10w40. Check the owners manuel if you have one could help out

i didnt get a manual with my bike, im gonna see if i cant find it online, i was assuming a 10w but the guy i bought it from said he was using a full synthetic, and that didnt make any sense to me considering most people ive talked to have told me not to put sythetics in my viffer

most bikes weren't designed to use synthetic oil for that era unless specified but i doubt it was engineered for synthetic oil. I havent had any problems with 10w40 so for, dont think i will either.

Never stated anyone would have a problem running Conventional Oil, & wouldn't tell someone not to run it, Unless synthetic is what is suppose to be used, or is what has been used most or all of it life.

Original Poster stated that the person he bought the bike from, was using Synthetic, but he thought it didn't make sense to him. If the bike has only seen synthetic oil, then putting Conventional oil in it would be the wrong call. But ultimately it is his call. I just stated that I run synthetic oil in my ole-girl.
I Choose to use Synthetic in by bike, because it is a low mileage bike, & In my personal exsperiance it is a good call for an engine that is high reving like the V4.
So lets just agree to dis-agree. :thumb:

In your case i would def. use synthetic oil. If the previous owner was uning syn and didnt have any problem then go for it. I just thought bikes from the 80's didnt use synthetic.

So i agree and im not disagreing:peace:
