Please help! I hope someone can answer my question with regard to the rotation of a starter on my 85' VF700F Interceptor.

My understanding is the starter is supposed to rotate in a "clockwise" motion. Is that clockwise when I have the 10 tooth gear facing me or away from me? I purchased a starter on eBay and unfortunately it doesnt have the green tag stating direction of rotation.

I'm afraid that If I place the starter on my m/c and it rotates the engine incorrectly, I will suffer engine damage. Is that possible as I really don't want to risk a catastrophic failure.

Thanks in advance for help with this!

I have two questions for you. 1) Do you have the starter that came with the bike?
If so 2) Is there a green sticker on it? If there is then you can place the starter in a vise and test the rotation by hooking up jumpers to the starter O.K. Now you will just want to touch the + lead to terminal to see the rotation. Also do the starters look the same? Just be safe the starter will jump when it spins.

    Thanks for replying.

The m/c did have a starter that I removed. The starter has the green sticker identifying rotation. However, the starter is dead after 40k miles/24 years. I tore it down hoping to be able to rebuild, but the armature is worn beyond rebuild. That's what prompted my search for another starter. It seems these little buggers are difficult to locate with regard to new/remanufactured.

As stated previously, I purchased a used starter on eBay and when it arrived, no sticker, both mounting lugs are notched out (as opposed to one thru hole and one notch on the original), and the overall length is 3/16" shorter than what I pulled off of the m/c. Before I attempt an install, I want to test to confirm proper rotation of gear.

So have you gotten any where with your starter? Will it bolt in place without any trouble? And have you Bench Tested rotation to see if your new starter works? if your old one has the arrow on it you could test the new one to see if that spins the same.

I tested the starter and it rotates clockwise (looking at the gear). I installed the starter and used larger fender washers to make up the difference in length to catch the slotted ears. The starter is working well and cranks the engine as required. However, the m/c had to have the carbs primed with fuel in order for the m/c to start which leads to another diagnosis/trouble-shooting session.

Before I installed the starter, I could push start the m/c and it would generally start the first or second try. I would have thought the starter would spin the motor fast enough to start as opposed to me pushing. Now, I'm thinking I have a dirty choke/carb/fuel delivery problem. When the m/c is cold the rpm fluctuates wildly at a steady throttle opening and I have to keep varying the throttle the m/c reaches operating temperature because it won't idle

I pulled the fuel filter and it is filthy. I'll relace the filter and then check the fuel pump to ensure it is operating properly. After that, I'll probably wind up pulling the carbs and giving them a thorough cleaning.

    Had the same problem

    Hey

I had the same problem with my bike. That is I had a fault starter it didn´t turn fast enough then I got the wrong starter from 700s bike and then I got the right one.But I had still problem with that the engine didn´t do anything just cranked. But if I would take the spark plugs and dip them in gasoline and light them up.Then the engine did do more then just crank. Finally I found out that it was the fuel relay and air in the fuel hose. You can put wire between two of the wires in the plug for the fuel relay.Do that then try to start. You can also mesure the pulse genator you should be around 480 ohm mutch over that you have a faulted pulse genator

the starter drive clutch would just not engauge the drive gear, and NO damage would be done.

no damage would be done even if your motor were spun backwards on the starter.
