1985 vf500f - valve cover gaskets

Hey y'all,

thought this was worth a shout, found this guy on ebay selling a enging gasket kit for 1983-85 vf'500's (from japan) heres the link if anyones interested, I have ordered one and will post when it arrives and show my progress with my attempt at valve adjustment.

Missing the most essential parts... the valve cover bolt grommets that are actually responsible for applying the pressure to prevent the valve covers from leaking.

 

god damn it, what do these parts look like? well guess i gotta find these before i begin thank you for letting me know.

Those are generic. Hopefully they will apply the correct pressure. Probably be fine. Hardly anybody replaces them because they are expensive from Honda, $8 ea. Then their valve cover still leaks, they try and over-tighten a shouldered bolt and... snap.

 

Thanks. Just got to relive that. This was the experience that got me to invest in a 1/4" torque wrench.

 

what is the correct pressure for these? i still have not located a manual yet.

 

Clymer manual says 6-9ft*lb for "Cylinder Head Cover"

 

Honda engine covers, universally, are 7 lb/ft, or 84 in/lbs. Honda standard torque for 6mm bolt.

 

Those are the gaskets I have had a ton of trouble with. Good price but the head gaskets don't fit without modifications. BUYER BEWARE!

 

Once a shoulder bolt bottoms, you're finished... crank all you want and it won't fix anything. You are relying on the thickness of those rubber grommets to hold the cover on and seal.
