Recently bought a 1984 VF1000F and it came with a vance and hines exhaust, I was wondering if someone can identify whether its a slip on or full exhaust (muffler + header). The bike seems to be running lean, getting lots of popping on decel and hesitation around 1-3k rpm, should I get a dynojet kit for it? seeing as its the only jet kit Ive found for the bike. Although I don't know if it already has a jet kit in it.

It's a full system from what I can see. Actually, I don't see the bulky stock collector.

You may only need to raise your needles a little. Go to a hardware store and take a dial caliper with you. You can find very small washers that will fit the needle, yet let the screw cap go over them. Your looking for washers that are .010", .020" and .030"max thick. I found .020" ones to use. The .010 would be great for fine tuning. Put one .020 under each needle then try bike. Tune from there. I think you can only get two washers under each cap.

If that doesn't totally correct it. Then you can take a hand pencil drill with a bit no more than .001"larger than the jet and ream the jet bigger. Make sure you you don't get any scratch type lines in the jet. May need Mr Magoo glasses to see for sure. Then try again. You may have to play with the needles again with the larger jet size.

I already ordered and received a dynojet stage 1 jet kit for the bike. Now I just need to get an oiling kit and some cam chain pensioners as the cams are slappin pretty bad and make a good bit of noise (The sound comes and goes at random)

What makes you think you need an oil kit? Your cams are fine right? I wouldn't put an oil kit on if all is ok. You don't have a problem with the banjo bolt (new style) orifices or the tubes they feed. Your getting enough oil to the cams. Use a good quality motorcycle oil only!! The oil mod is kind of snake oil IMO. You don't really want to take oil away from the main bearings and the oil mod does that.

I guess you could say I'm worried about the longevity of the bike especially since a couple days after I bought it I got stuck in heavy traffic when it was 78 degrees out and the bike was overheating, it started idling at 2k rpms, was also breaking up real bad when I tried to take it above 5k until it cooled down, and the heat coming off of it was pretty darn hot. I did some research on it came across a good bit of info regarding these early V4s and premature camshaft wear due to (not enough oil)/(too hot and thinned out) oil going to the heads. I also wired up a manual fan switch, flushed the coolant and replaced it with 80% H2o 20% antifree + redline water wetter, and I have a 160 degree thermostat in a box waitin to go in since it took forever to make its way to my door. All that coupled with the noise from the heads (not just the chain slap) makes me worry.
