Hi all. Nearly time to replace the rear tyre. Looking at a Pilot Road 2. Not sure which to go with, as there is $5 difference between a 180/55 and a 190/50. I mainly commute in traffic, and don't do a lot of "sports" riding. Not a fast cornerer either.

What difference would commonly be noticed between the two tyres, please?

Ahhhh...someone else just put a 190 on a 5th gen not to long ago on this website...forgot who it was. Anyways, I would kinda think not to do it, as the VFR is not a horsepower ripping, tire shredding monster, and a 190 will most likely just give you a touch heavier/slower handling. Keep the 180, it works just fine. After all, we are riding sportbikes not Orange County Choppers bikes (American Chopper show on Discovery Channel in US) with 250 or 300 rear tires just for show.

I’m not a rip up the tarmac rider, but I doubt the 190 would improve anything. When I changed the rear tyre on the gen3 750 from 170 to 180 I dropped the front down 7mm to compensate. This is a trade off though for some stability but did improve the steering. If I still have the gen 3 when the tyre wears out I will go back to the 170 size, the design engineers seem to know best.
    I currently run 120 Battlax 014 fronts and 180 Battlax 020 rears on both the 90 and 02 VFR’s.

The 190 is a bit wider and a little shorter. You may notice a difference on turn in but probably nothing to drastic, probably the same thing you'd notice just by installing any new tire. The performance difference is neglible. The astetic difference may be desirable, I personally like to have wider tires. If you not going in for looks, I'd say save the 5 bucks and buy a beer.
