I just picked up a super clean 98 VFR this week. I've been riding old two-stroke Italian scooters for years (Lambrettas, Vespa) and hadn't been on a regular bike since 1980. Back then it was an RD350. So I picked up my VFR in San Jose and rode it back to Fresno (160 miles) right off the bat.

    Anyway:
I'd like to mount my Tom Tom One on it but want to power it off the bike. The internal battery only goes for 2 hours. Is there an easy access to 12volts up near the bars for me to plug into?
    Cheers

I'd prefer running a separate circuit and a relay. It's not a long run from the batt to the instrument cluster, and there's plenty of places to run the wire along with the existing harness.
Use a relay to isolate your accessory power (GPS) from your switched power source in the fairing. That'll keep you from overloading a circuit by just tapping existing switched wiring. I would tap the lights to get switched power to close the relay.

You could get fancy and have a three way switch too. One position could be "AUTO" where the GPS circuit comes on with the ignition switch. Another position could be "OFF" where the lead is dead if you don't have your GPS plugged in and don't want a hot lead dangling around. The third could be "ON" giving you the option to power up your GPS without the bike ignition on. IMO that would give you all the flexibility you would ever need.
