I have an 04 VFR with 25,000 miles. I just picked the bike up a couple weeks ago. I've only put about 500 miles on the bike, seems to run fine. But the clutch grabs when the lever is out almost all the way (about 90%). Is there a way to adjust it to grab about half way out from the grip? I've played with the adjuster, and can't seem to get it to change much. Never had anything with a hydrolic clutch before. How long has anyone gone before a new clutch is needed? I ordered the workshop manual, but won't have it for a few more days. Any info would be appreciated.

As far as how long will a clutch last, I think it really depends on how much that you "abuse" the clutch more than anything. Wheelies, hard launches, excessive slipping, etc. I can only compare the hydraulic clutch on my FZR1000, and after changing the plates and springs at 15,000, they were still going strong at 32,000 when I sold her. Seems like a well taken care of clutch could go 20,000 plus easy. Not sure about the clutch release adjustment, besides what you have already tried. Mine releases way out as you describe.

Sounds good. I'm an easy rider, don't slip it much, try and shift smoothly, don't do any wheelies or anything. Good to hear your grabs out far too.

The adjustment wheel on the clutch lever allows only for the distance of the clutch lever from the hand grip, not the point at which the clutch engages. If you have a small hand then you can adjust the wheel so that the lever is closer to the hand grip. Large hand further away....etc. The same holds true for the brake lever. It's really adjusting for the riders comfort not clutch operation. It's probably a good idea to get a manual and see what adjustments are required, how to make them and what the effect of making the adjusment is prior to making the adjustment. Chances are the clutch is engaging properly from what you describe. Nice bike eh!

I can check the manual either tonight or tomorrow night to confirm, but on a hydrolic assembly the fluid is supposed to backfill from the M/C as the clutch (or brakes) wear. That's why you don't adjust anything on hydrolic disks on a car or bike.

I suppose there could also be a problem with the M/C or slave cylinder, or the line connecting them. Maybe a slave with a limited range of motion so it is always 'in' too deep?

    ikavo,
Thanks for the reply, from what I've read in the replys and all. That's how the hydrolic clutches work. They grab at the end, and I've become used to it now. I've always had cable operated clutch, which you can set to grab where you want. Thanks for checking that out. My manual should be here any day now.
    Thanks, Ian
