I have an 02 VFR 800 with 16k miles. The last few weeks upon starting the bike I have noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine right after starting it. The noise goes away when the bike warms up but I can notice a pinging and rattlie if I rev up the bike while in neutral.. I can't figure out what it is. I'm thinking maybe because the oil is thicker when its cold not lubricating certain parts initially. I live in NY temps have been 45 in morning.
Perhaps it is my chain that is rattling I'm not sure what to make of the noise. The bike runs great and I have had 0 problems with it. Would be nice to know what it is to rest my mind and make sure I'm not going to damage the bike.

Sounds like the rattle is coming from the cases. If I put my ear near the gear shifter it seems to be coming from that area.

With the rattle, try pulling the clutch in and note the sound. It's normal to have a clutch rattle when the bike is in neutral but you should able to mute the sound a little if you pull in the clutch.

If that doesn't help with the rattling sound maybe the starter valves need to be synchronized. I'm not 100% sure and I'm not a pro-mechanic so take that with a grain of salt.

joey is right try pulling in the clutch, if that works or even lessens the rattle you may need to ajust the clutch
