I'm gonna take her in to the mechanic this weekend, but I like having an idea of possible / probable causes vs going in blind. Here's the facts
    • 00 VFR 800
    • 31k miles
    • all maintenance & recalls current
    • 100% reliable until this issue
I'm in Houston, TX. Weather was mid 80s. I filled the tank at lunch, rode to a nearby (<1 mile) restaurant, then back to work. Bike felt fine. Leaving the office about 4 hours later, she doesn't start. FI light blinks once (long), then twice (short). A hasty google search indicated that Fuel Injector #1 is bad? is this correct?

I follow the instructions in the owners manual (hold start button for 5 sec. etc), no go. I walk the bike and pop the clutch - almost starts. Wait a minute then try again... FI light has stopped blinking, and she starts right up.

After puttering around in the parking lot a few minutes, I figure it's probably safe to ride home... about 2 minutes into the freeway ride ~45 MPH, she dies. A quick turn of the ignition to off, then a restart, and she's fine. After 10 minutes or so of cruising at ~70mph, she dies again. I should note that I have a digital voltmeter readout in my fairing, and it's normally at a rock-steady 14.8 on the highway. Roughly 12.3 at idle. She dropped to 12.6 on the freeway. Temperatures remained in the normal range ~186°F while moving on the freeway. Fluid levels are normal.

Peculiar behavior noted: I felt that she was down on power during hard acceleration, and that I could feel a definite 'miss', as if at least one cylinder wasn't firing.

I have an important appointment tomorrow morning, so I'm up at the crack of dawn to rent a car (mine is in the shop).

I know this is an incomplete description at best, but I'm not a mechanic, and paid attention to what seemed relevant to my limited training.

Any advice / input welcome. I'll also report what the mechanic's diagnosis is, if anyone is interested.

    Cheers
