This article was originally posted to the VFR List and Christopher has graciously allowed me to post it here as a reference for others. Someone on the List posted a question regarding after-market shocks for the '94-'97 VFR. This questions comes up fairly often and perhaps Christopher's research will help others. As Christopher was saying ... I've actually been researching this exact topic. Here's what I've found. If any listers have info that indicates otherwise, please correct me.
- Progessive ($300-400) - Has Spring Preload and Rebound. No compression but is rebuildable. Some e-mail and data indicates that it has compression, others indicate it doesn't. Least expensive alternative.
- Ohlins ($800-900) - Fully adjustable. Remote hydraulic spring preload and remote reservoir.
- Penske ($750-850) - Fully adjustable but no hydraulic spring preload and has a Remote reservoir. Personally, for the price difference, I'd opt for the Ohlins.
- White Power ($670+) - Supposedly fully adjustable but you might have to pay more to get ride height adjustment. The guy was unsure if the White Power was remote reservoir or piggyback reservoir. Also might be able to get hydraulic spring preload for extra.
- Other Shocks - FOX, Koni. Multiple sources (suppliers) have told me that these shocks are not available for the 94-97's.
Hope this helps.
