Removing the Windscreen of a '94 - '97 VFR

Some Viffers have asked how to remove the windscreen from their '94+ VFR. Some simply want to do an annual bug cleaning or to install a new windscreen free of dings and scratches.

First, place the bike on the center stand for a solid and level work platform.

  1. Remove the two (2) screws on the inside of each panel supporting the windscreen.

  2. Next, ease the bottom rubber boot covering the rear mirror stalks to expose the two (2) small mounting bolts. Remove these two (2) bolts and pay CLOSE attention to the alignment of the mounting plates on the side of the fairing. These mounting plates are not reversible and the rubber boot will not fit properly if the plates are not re-installed in the correct direction. The difference in shape if installed backwards is very small, but enough of a difference that the boot will not secure properly.

  3. Once both mirrors and the four (4) inside screws are removed, then gently work the windscreen out of the front fairing. It may be somewhat snug. The windscreen has a lip that extends into the fairing next to the wind slot. Once the windscreen is clear of that area, then the screen just slides out.

  4. Installing the old windscreen (or a similar design) only has two (2) cautions. Again, make sure the mounting plates are installed in the correct direction. These plates are not clearly marked up or down and so it is easy to reverse them. Secondly, the lower inside screws seem to strip easily according to several Viffers. So use a little WD40 or something similar on the screw and then work the screws in carefully.
That's it. Either a nice clean windscreen (all the bug parts are gone) or a new tinted windscreen without scratches or dings!
