Just picked up a new VFR, and had a question about the first oil change. The service manual says the first maintenance is at 600, but I've heard from several people, and I'm pretty I read from people on these boards (can't find the posts right now though :frown:) that sooner is better, and too early can't hurt. It's only got 100 miles on it, would it be a bad thing to get it changed now? Thanks in advance!

Personally, you cannot go wrong with changing your oil/filter earlier if you have the money. I would not change my at 100 miles though....maybe 300 or 400. That is just me though. If I were you, I would give her a couple thousand miles before you put synthetic in it to make sure she is good and broken in before you put in the slippery stuff....

You will find A LOT of varying opinions on oil. I think the main thing to consider is just frequency, and a quality brand.

save your money and do it at 600 miles. You're not hurting anything either. A filter and a gallon of oil is not cheap.

I did mine at 300 miles and then again at 600. It can't hurt.

    Ok. Guys. Seriously.

There are special additives to the oil from the factory that you cannot replicate.

Wait until 600 miles / 1000kms. There's an oil filter to keep it clean. From my sources, which I greatly trust, wait. Wait wait wait. And don't use synthetic until 8,000kms.

Only do earlier if you redline it a lot (read: go to the track).

LOL sheesh ya got to love it, change it if you know whats good for you, or if it bothers you if ??? it's your bike do what ever, but me? To simple to play it safe, if you can't afford an oil change, you best get out of this sport, this is at the least of the expenses. Changed the oil on my new bikes once home. 35 miles, then again at 100, then again at 500, then again at 1000, then again at 2000, then again at 3000 where you go full synthetic. don't believe me try reading some research on the subject. Everyone was their own thoughts, and thats cool, it's their machine. Hell I've seen lawn mowers running fine after 5 years with only one oil change, does that make it right? Yea owners manual says, But if you change your oil and look at it coming out, you'll know you did right, Ha filter, sounds like a bit of denial there. You don't need that crummy oil in there any longer than it needs to be. I say change it out now then at the next service, I'm a change your oil every 2k type, cheap insurance. and in the long run I know it's worth every penny. Now in defense of new technologies, yea new engine have better materials and tolerances, still say, having been around a lot of engines being torn down and have seen first hand what's what, so... the choice is all yours.

If it was mine, I would go ahead and change the oil, let the filter wait till 600 miles. New machinery always has some trash floating around in the crank case, fine metal shavings, sometimes bits of excess gasket material and such. Just call it babying you investment. Oil changes are cheap if you provide the labor.

And I wouldn't use synthetic at all... The clutch doesn't like it.. UNLESS Honda says it's ok.. I tried on the XX.. not good.. slipped bad. Too much friction modifiers.
