    Hi Guy's
Hope you can help me out here! I have a 2001 vfr last of the models before the Vtech.
Problem is I go for a ride for an hour or so and when i stop the battery is dead. I will clutch start it and keep it running for only 60 seconds and it will start no worries. Ride for another half hour an it starts perfectly. Ride for another half hour and you guessed it ! It starts perfectly again. I live in the country so mostly i am doing 100kph. Tacho sits on around 4500rpm doing that speed.
I have just had the battery changed and checked all the wires going from the battery to the ground and some other connections going to the computer at the back, all seems good.
It just seems strange that if it was the R/R why would the battry die when riding for more than a hour but seems ok when riding for only half that time.
I was told by my mechanic that my model has the bigger R/R with the cooling fins on it. Would this make any difference.
    Please help
    Scotti

I might be missing something. Did you repeat this hour test, or did the "battery die" just the one time after the hour but work the other times? And by saying the battery dies, does that = no lights/accy or just no cranking? Just looking for a place to start:smile:

Its happened 3 times so far and when she goes dead there is nothing there at all. The bikes at the mechanics now for them to have a look at it.

    My guess is the R/R.

The reason for the inconsistency, is because maybe at certain RPM's the R/R is actually regulating the voltage properly and charging the battery, however it sounds like its on the way out.

Invest in a $20 multimeter. All you need to do is spend 10 minutes with it, and you can narrow the problem down, but thats probably what your mechanic is doing right now.

    Good luck.

    Hi Scottie,
Sorry I don't have any solution for you, jsut letting you know I read stuff on this forum!
I want to second what "privateer" has said about being sure the battery is dead. There could be a loose wire to your ECM, or a make/break fuse that is making you think all is dead, when it is not. Carry a multi - meter or test light and check the battery next time this happens.

Look for melted/burned wires on starter solenoid plug-in connector
