VFR vs FZ1

    I have an '04 Yamaha FZ1 (gen1). I am thinking of selling it and getting something different. How does the latest gen VFR compare to my bike?

    The FZ1 handles much more nimble, a lot lighter, and is a lot faster. Two totally different bikes. The VFR is a better all around bike for long trips, better comfort, dependability, and so on......it just really doesn't do anything wrong...plus if maintained well, that V4 will last forever just about.

    ?? Kwai Chang mentioned FZ Mk1, from riding with a Mate with an '02 Fz would think the VFR easily the better handler through the twisties and FZ's weight at 208kg dry the same as my Gen 5 '99.

    Mind the FZ does go like stink in a straight line and he rekons its sit up and beg riding positiion and bigger seat the more comfortable for him. Personally prefer the VFR's slight lean forward ergo's, better fairing coverage and interesting V4 sound...

    Thats ok :smile:, thought you thinking about the naked Mk2 '07 FZ1 at 198kg dry the lighter and with USD forks and now aluminum frame potentially the quicker handling, still don't like its bolt upright ergo's though.

    i test rode the first model FZ1 with a few to purchase a few years back.
    my initial impression compared to my ,at the time gen 5, was of sitting 'on top of the bike' as opposed to in the bike. quite soft on the suspension and a
    good strong motor too, pulled like a train. I guess if i had to nail it one, I felt more a part of the ride experience on the VFR than the FZ. for me the sit up position and top heavy feel didnt suit. in the end i bought (yet another) VTR 1000.

    yeah, no auto tilt windscreen or standard hard bags here.(latest FZ)Yestarday I rode 80 miles on the highway, 10 in the twisties, ten more in town, 10 twisties, 80 highway. The VFR did everything I asked her to without complaining.

    Inline 4's are like opinions, everyone has one...

    V4's rule. Counting the VFR, I think there are a total of 3 V4 bikes on the market.

    although quite a few folks have been less than complimentary about the off/on throttle jerkiness of the VFR, i have to tell you, the FZ is much worse. i test rode one at a demo day, rode it for about 45 miles, and all i can say is that the mapping needed a boatload of work. i'm not sure even mapping could fix what i experienced.....it stunk. The VFR mapping and rideability are superior in stock form.

    Thanks for all of your input. Please keep it comming.

    My bike is a gen1 FZ1. It has carbs, so there are no mapping issues. I have jetted them and installed a full Muzzy. It is very fast (at least it is to me), and it has a comfortable ride. I'd have to agree that it does seem somewhat top heavy and the handling is a bit sluggish. I bought it because I was having problems with my hands going to sleep on my old bike (Ninja 650r). I haven't had that problem with the FZ. Maybe because of the more upright riding position or maybe because of the I-4 instead of the I-twin of the Ninja.

    The power is great but I think I would like something more nimble. I believe the VFR is more nimble. I'm curious about the power. The VFR's riding position is more leaned forward. I don't want to get back into a situation of numb hands.

    I own a 02 vfr and have owned a 03 Fz1. I am 6'3" and I felt like the Grape Ape riding on the Fz1. Like richard said, you really sit on top of the bike.

    The Fz1 is a great bike, I took her for a 1500 mile trip form Dallas,tx to eureka springs, Ar and all around arkansas and back to dallas in a 3 day weekend. I was sore for a while with the stock seat.

    The vfr has around 30hp less than the Fz1. my 02 had 137hp. The vfr has the same surge in power the fz has but it is around 7000rpms.

    I thinks the Fz1 corners great, depending on the tires you are runnning, but all around I like the VFR better, The wind beats me up less, very smooth, corners great, Looks alot better, and I really dont notice the power difference. For the days I realy want power, I will ride the Busa.

    Also, my hands do not get as numb with the VFR
