new to the bike world and wanted to get a pretty reasonable price bike to start off with just incase I drop it a few times. found a 91 vfr750 for $1K guy said that it needed a battery and was ready to go. he said that we could jump it off and listen to it run. long story short I bought the bike went home purchased a new battery and lo and behold it wont hold a charge. again im new to bikes never owned one and have no clue what to do so i took it to a local shop where they put a new stator on it with no success I told him about the articles on this sight about the RR and he was going to look into it

last i was told that the previous owner had all the wiring rigged so bad that he was having a hard time getting the rr straight I asked him to switch it over to a jixxer rr. its been over a month and still no bike.

is this bike worth investing any more money and should this problem be a simple fixxer? its a 91 vfr 750 with 23k miles all the plastics are there but held on with tie straps it has definatly been layed down by the previous owner motor sound great. do I need to find another mechanic or just cut my loss and find somehing else?

If you can get it working with a new RR then I would just fix it for now. Maybe they guy will give you a break since the Stator did not fix it as he said it would? I would think a new stator, R/R and battery with good wiring should make it ride able for you!

The charging system is REALLY simple to re-wire, if that's necessary.

I would replace the following wiring:
1.) All three stator to R/R wires (yellow?), upgrade to AT LEAST 18 gauge wire
2.) R/R to battery, upgrade to AT LEAST 16 gauge wire
3.) Ground wiring, upgrade to AT LEAST 16 gauge wire.

Just search the forums for R/R and you'll come up with LOTS of information on how to do this, as well as some alternative wiring that you might explore.

I just had to replace my rr last year, battery would not hold a charge.

Used a yamaha R1 rr and things are good. basically 3 wires from the stator, order does not matter, the positive goes to the battery and the other is a ground if I remember correctly.

Use the Honda updated R/R and your bike should be fine. There are some generic and other bike brand R/R's that others are using but the Honda updated makes all of the difference. I have had mine on for 5K and no problems before that I had tried an electrosport and still had problems with the lights and it actually ran worse (98 FI),
