If you are looking for the sound or performance, I don't believe you can beat Yoshimura. I couldn't believe the kick they added to my 500.

I got them on eBay. I am planning to sell my VF500 and will probably put the stock mufflers back on it. I will sell my Yoshimura pipes for $500 plus shipping.

Just buy any old exhaust can you like on ebay, and have your local Midas or whoever make you a midpipe. Total cost can be under $50! Get some thin rubber and a strip of aluminum to make up the hanger. If you can use your hands and get creative it can come out real nice.

I got lucky and found a full V&H 2-2 system for my 83 750, in real nice shape. I got a carbon 2 Bros. can from a 929 for free, and I'm going to cut it up to make a pair of shorty exhausts.

I like the looks, sound and light weight of these MotoGP style rev-cones from Cone Engineering:

The bike ran fine without any jetting changes. The new cones are just a lot lighter and louder than the OEM pipes. I did put in a K&N filter and removed the airbox snorkel, so at the same time I put in a DynoJet kit. I just followed the directions. It involves new DJ needles, spacers, pilot and main jets, and adjusting the pilot screws.

Not too hard to do for me, but if you aren't comfy tearing into your carbs have a reputable dealer or bike repair shop do it for you. It would be cheaper if you take the entire carb assy. into their shop (with the kit) and have 'em do it. Leave the carbs attached to the aluminum airbox plate to maintain your butterfly synchronization.

Most guys here recommend replacing the carb rubber boots too, but it just depends what condition they are in. They are a bi#ch to get back on... use some WD 40 on the carb spigots and boots, and I have the best luck stabbing the two rear spigots, and then using a wide flat pry-bar levering against the aluminum airbox plate to pop the front two into place. Just don't force it or rush it... it shouldn't take more than a couple of attempts.

    See ya'

thanks BLIGHT... where you get the dynojet kit... thanks for the rest of the info... I have had the carbs totally removed to clean and changed out the phillip screws with new anodized hex nuts, pilot jets were clogged and carbs were dirty. also bought new rubber boots... my worst part is the throttle linkage... huge pain in the neck...I used a little grease and stabbed the fronts and the back rocked until they slid in... patients is a must... nice single sided swing arm...

Thanks.... pretty sure I got the kit on eBay, like this one: 86 Honda VF500 Interceptor Dynojet Carb Jet Kit STG 1 | eBay

They are on DynoJet's site too: Dynojet Jet Kits - Offering Motorcycle Jet Kits & ATV Jet Kits

A Google search will likely bring up other sources.

    Good luck!

Blight, what size is the inlet on the cone you used? I was looking at doing something similar and I wasn't sure what size to use.

Hi.... I really don't recall, but I think it was around 1.75". I removed one of the stock pipes and measured the collector box outlet spigot (metric) and got a pair of cones just slightly larger. I ended up using the OEM muffler joint packing by trimming it a bit.

I also had to cut a couple of slots in the cone inlet tube so the S.S. t-clamp could clamp the cone muffler securely. They have been on for over a thousand miles and are still holding tight with no other supports.

Thanks Blight, I was just wondering, I measured the collector outlet as well and ended up with a wacky standard size, I figured it was metric. Just wanted to make sure. Bike looks fantastic by the way!

I bought two yesterday... they are smaller than they look in the pic. super light and very nice quality... definitely going to be a little louder... ordering jet kit today.. these have no backpressure unlike the stock mufflers.
