over heating and fairign problem

    hell i have a 1991 vfr and it overheates, bike overheats after a while of riding aproxx 1hr. i have taken the thermostat out and it is working. new colant is in the bike now. IF there is any common everheating problems for this bike please let me know

    Also where is the best place to pick up some fairings besides craigslist and ebay?

    How do you know the thermostat is working for sure? Did you heat it up in a pan of water on the stove with a thermometer? Did you try running the bike with the thermostat out to see if it overheats?

    as I said in a previous post, check also the fan thermoswitch. After some years, the fan thermoswitch activate the fan at a too high temp, so it's difficult to cool the engine. Personally, I mounted a manual switch to activate the fan as the temp gauge attains mid/scale. Now, no ore troubles with urban traffic or long time ride at low speed.

    What speeds does the overheating occur at? Are we talking low speeds or high speeds? As Carmine mentioned, since your thermostat is working, it could be your fan thermoswitch.

    Also, if you have old coolant, it might not be a bad idea to flush the system and put in some fresh coolant.

    It is common for the VFR to run fairly hot and my right leg generally stays warm, but I don't think they overheat too often. On your 91, is there a fan and does it seem to be working? Is the temp maxing out the gauge? Have you flushed the system as DS suggested and are you pretty sure it is circulating? Is it maintaining the coolant level or is there possibly a leak?

    May have air trapped in system. When its cooled down check the level in the radiator itself. If its full you may have a plugged radiator or faulty waterpump if it is overheating while driving down the road.

    good idea to put in fresh coolant, also to check if there's some air trapped. Has anyone of you heard about a fan thermoswitch that begins to work at lower temp.? I know that there are aftermarket products for Honda Cars (a switch working at +- 80°C) but not idea if something like that exists for our VFR.

    Yep. I'd "burp" the system at the very least. it will take you all of 5 min. to do.
    Flushing would also be recommended in your manual. Whens the last time you swapped out the coolant? If it isnt recently, I'd say your '91 is overdue...could have been years since its been done.

    My '93 was on the extremely high temp side two years ago, and everything checked out. Opened her up to flush and viola! the coolant was brown!!!
    It had probably been years.
    Swapped out fluids- added some waterwetter- Burped the system-
    Never seen the gauge go over 3/4 since.

    How old is the engine oil? If the viscosicty is to thin that will have some effect o the engine temp as well. Have heard of a number people that run a 20-50 in warmer climates and it has helped.
