I was planning on buying a '99 tomorrow with only 5K on it. The bike is literally new. I was excited until I starting reading all the posts about the charging system problems so many have experienced. I don't want to buy a money pit or something that will leave me stranded. Not a tech guy so I'm leary now. Is this really as big of a problem as it sounds?

    Any advice appreciated.

Man that is brand new. If you can get a decent price, don't miss it. I was hesitant about buying mine until I bought it. I have _never_ enjoyed a motorcycle as much as this one. I read a lot about them before buying and the general message I got was 'the thing is bulletproof'. My bike is a 98 so is very similar to yours. It has never in the maint history of the previous owner had any problems. Routine maint is all that has ever been done to this bike other than after market add-ons like pipe, seat, heli bars, etc... I can't reccommennd the bike high enough. It also has a pretty good resale value if you don't convert like the rest of us. You will convert, though. Resistance is futile...prepare for assimilation. ;)

Hey dude, Thanks for the reply. The bike is in Monterey, which is where I'm off to tonight. I live in the Auburn area. If I get this thing, we'll have to hook up. Sounds like your not far away.

You know, I think the only reason that the regulator rectifier unit gets so much press is because there is nothing else to talk about! Nothing else breaks! Even the RR is a rare event really and if it goes, you are out $150. Compare that to any other bike on the I believe that the VFR can hold it's own.

Good luck on your 99 purchase!:bolt:

Quite agree about that. I've a 99 with 35,000 miles, and apart from routine service, tyres, chain and sprockets, etc, the bike has only cost me about £200 for "things going wrong", namely the RR and a couple of batterys. I have a trickle charger now and at any time the bike is in the garage at home it gets plugged in, to keep the battery fully charged. Only other problem I had was with the Fi light glowing, and that was finally traced to a bad earth lead.
Buy and enjoy a great bike.

cool. I live in atascadero, but one of my favorite rides is out to morrow bay then up the coast to fergusen/nacimiento road back across the army post then back down here through the backroads. hmm, looks like you are close to sac... that's quite a long haul. you're pretty close to vfrworld central...I'm gonna try to get up to the bay area soon.

    Vfr Electrical

I could write a thesis on the vfr800, i bought a used 1999 with 15000 miles on it last year after researching the bike to death and back, the regulator rectifier issue was on the vfr750s and is heavily documented.
Pay attention to the posts about batteries, not keeping them charged up will bring you grief. Keep in mind that a motorcycle battery life is dependant on a number of factors here is a link to a great article
