    Guys,

I'm an outside salesman and travel to customers all day long. I put on 1000 miles this month for work, it has been a blast and a $ saver. The issue here is the cell phone. My customers are used to calling and having me pick up the phone. On the bike I wait till I stop and that has worked fine. I'm really thinking of sticking to this I hate the idea of talking and riding.

I now see there are headsets for helmets. I really don't like the idea for safety reasons since I'm mostly on the highway things happen fast.

Give me some opinions on this.

    Anyone else do this?

    Joe

IN MY OPINION.....I would keep with your policy of stopping and answering. I think talking on a cellphone is unsafe in a car, so on a bike where you need your attention "on the road" and distracted by some outside conversation. I believe that being involved in a conversation with someone on a phone is more of a distraction, and is different and more dangerous than listening to the radio, and/or talking to someone in a car. Yes, listening to a radio can be dangerous as well as eating while driving. I know people are gonna come bitchin' and moaning at me for saying it is unsafe, but that is what I believe, and believe that is a fact based on seeing people on phones each day. If someone is so distracted in a car, a bike makes it worse because you don't have a cage/airbags around you for protection. I hardly ever drive in my car and talk, unless it is on the open road somewhere. I want my full attention devoted to the a-holes on the road.

However, this is a free country and we all can do as we want and get away with......but, if I was king shit, I would ban all cell phones while operating a moving vehicle by the operator. :blah: :blah:

Ok, now that my panties are all in a bundle, I am gonna go get some lunch....finally! :caked:

Well I say give it a try. Once you use it, you'll probably know within 1 mile whether or not it's a good idea for you personally. I don't think I would like it, but that's me. You don't know unless you try it. Some people were completely against music too....until they tried it.

I ride with my iphone, the headphones have this cool little button on them to turn off the music.. once in a while the phone has been nudged and has answered a call from 0-15 miles an hour they can hear me in my helmet but once I go above that the wind is really bad. I do agree that its bad to talk in a car I dont talk on my bike but you have to try things once right :D

I would suggest that it's pretty unprofessional to answer a phone with all of that wind blast in the background.

Yes, you are keeping in touch with your customers by answering that phone, but if they can't hear what you're saying...

I'd suggest the previous method of pulling over and answering the phone.

I was thinking about getting a bluetooth compatible headset for my helmet too since I do a lot of commuting. My thinking was that if it felt too dangerous to talk on the phone or the quality is too terrible, that at least i would have a realtime notification of when calls came in. That'd give me a chance to pull off at the next exit and park on the on ramp if I needed too.

Yes I agree talking on the phone and riding isn't a great idea. I guess since I'm using the bike a lot for work I was trying to do something that should only done in a car.

I'm loving the commute on the bike! I saved $ 60.00 this month in gas. It might not sound like a lot but it feels better in my pocket than going to the middle east.

Hey that sounds like a new post!!!

IMHO...The main reason I ride is to be one with myself and my own thoughts and live in the moment.
I would not entertain the thought of carrying on a conversation with a client while riding.
I do carry a cell, but always ignore it when it goes off in my pocket and do call-backs later when I can devote 100% to the conversation..
My riding time is SACRED time for me and will not be interupted.

I use a Scala Rider. In a full face helmet, it is clear up to about 70 mph. Rarely can the person calling tell I am on a bike. An added side effect is that my phone also is an mp3 player. The new Scala Riders have built in FM tuners as well. The speakers attach to the inside of the helmet, and do not go into the ear.

I start commuting rain or shine tomorrow. I spend $250 a month for fuel for the POS F150. I will NEVER, EVER answer a phone on a motorcycle. I move that is made "Man Law".

    KC-10 FE out...

answering the phone likely requires some action by the rider, talking hands free requires less .vs. talking with your helmet on when pulled over. If the dude has a job that requires him to be responsive to his clients then recommend a blue tooth headset... He can decide how to use it....the scala is the one I've read/heard about but have no experience with... none (?) are stereo. I'd be interested to hear your experience if you get/use a BT headset....

couldn't agree more My $.02 iguess that makes 6 cents... eh

i wonder how you can fit a blue tooth under a full face helmet anyways. unless its a size or 2 to big i have a hell of time keeping ear plugs to stay in when getting my helmet on

There are a couple different choices out there as far as bluetooth for motorcycle helmets go. One from Blueant wireless was a single speaker and mic that could fit in full face helmets with a small unit that just velcros to the helmet or can be attached with adhesive. That one I believe you have to answer your calls by pushing the button on the unit attached to the helmet. Not sure if if you can voice activate incoming calls by saying "answer" or not.

Chatterbox offers stereo headsets with bluetooth compatibility and mp3 line inputs. I believe they can even silence the mp3 if you have an incoming call.

Let us know what you try out. I'm interested to hear you're thoughts.

And to those who have "sacred" riding time, that's fine, I wouldn't even have my phone turned on then. But if he's commuting on the slabs and traffic is light...would it really be THAT distracting to have a conversation? In town traffic, technical roads, heavy traffic, and weather would stop me from having a conversation, but that's when just knowing you have a call coming in would be nice so you can respond quicker(at a pull off) instead of riding around for a few hours before you check your phone.

they haven't been out that long. I believe the chatterbox one (edit: with stereo bluetooth) came out within the last year and the blueant one...at least two years. It's fairly new stuff. Some of the guys at dealerships didn't even have a clue what I was talking about so no worries.
