Speratic Stalling

    Hi everyone,
    I have a 1986 VFR 750 that just recently started stalling. I will be out on the bike and the bike will be running fine and then it will start to chug and when I come to a stop I will notice a drop in my rpm's and all of a sudden it will die on me. The bike will always start right back up again. I have emptied out my gas tank and flushed it out and put a new glass fuel filter in and took it out for another ride there was no difference. At this point I called my local honda dealership and told them whats going on and asked them if it could be carb problem they said no, if it was the problem it would happen all the time, which it does not. Sometimes it will run great. They said the problem could be caused by a ventilation problem in the gas cap. Has anybody heard of this or have any other ideas of what might be causing this, I am completely stumped so any help would be great.Thank You.

    When it dies, open the gas cap, and listen closely for a "psst" sound. The gas tank must allow air to enter before gas can flow out. But, if this was your problem, it wouldn't always start right back up. Does it bog down before stopping, or does it just die. I think if you had a venting problem, it would bog down first.

    Was going to say the dreaded RR thing, but that too more than likely wouldn't let you start it right back up. Hmm Yea I'm thinking fuel, maybe the pump?

    It actually bogs down before it dies. Is this a common problem?

    Does that year bike have a fuel petcock on the tank? And if so, has it been disassembled and checked for debris? This sounds like a definite fuel starvation problem. If the fuel tank vent isn't clogged, the fuel pump is working, and your new fuel filter isn't clogged, then there must be an obstruction somewhere in the common fuel source.

    And since I don't know Interceptors very well yet, I don't know if they have a "pre-filter" in between the fuel tank and the petcock. On most bikes with manual petcocks on the fuel tank, there is a filter attached to the petcock that is about the diameter of a pencil and a couple of inches long. They can get clogged with debris that can be a bit stubborn.

    When I flushed out my gas tank I also pulled out the petcock thinking the same thing maybe there is a filter. When I pulled it out there was no filter of any kind inside, I then refered to my clymer manual it also showed no petcock filter it lookes like honda started putting those in around the 1990's models. Thanks for the help anyway.

    if you hear the fuel pump clicking continuously (while bike is running) it means that too little fuel is getting to pump or a stuck valve inside pump.

    you need to buy or download a Honda Service manual for that bike and follow testing proceedure for fuel pump.
