I just picked up my new '07 Interceptor yesterday! 25th anniversary, bags, the whole bit. I have owned numerous new bikes in the past, and usual break-in has usually been varying the bike's speed and going up and down through the gearbox (as opposed to just doing 70 on the freeway).

Anything different to keep in mind for the break-in period or anything to be aware of? Thanks!!

Currently doing the same to my '07 and what you've suggested is the way to go. I've been told not to let the vtec kick in during the running in period (7000 rpm for me) but apart from that just use the gears and revs up to that limit.

You can rest your Springer until you get to your 600 mile service.

I finally adjusted out the slack in my throttle last night - not really a mechanical break-in, but a rider-bike interface break-in after figuring out what I liked/did not like after some miles. Much easier to be smooth.

Don't put the bike under heavy load and I would avoid the VTEC range. Read the owner's manual about break-in as that is your best source. The break-in period is only 300 miles as stated in the '07 manual.

Thanks for the input! I will get into the owners manual the next night or two at work and I will be able to put some miles on it next weekend.

This is wierd, says in my manual 500 miles to run it in, and mine's an '07 too

In the wiki I posted a link to that alternative break in method that is pretty controversial where you run the piss out of it. it sounds interesting but I dont know anyone who has done...

My manual said 300 but the dealer said 600. I have run it through every gear; try not to maintain a constant RPM over a long period of time; no WTO acceleration and I have hit VTEC numerous times. I wouldn't recommend rev limiter...

I bought my 03' with 6k miles, after flogging it around I started getting that wonderful break in smell... I think you need to warm it up and run it hard. Google engine break in and you will see a great article about a more aggressive break in period

I know that the specifications are slightly different from country to country, but why would the break-in period recommendation not be the same? The manual for my 2007 US model states 300 miles for break-in, 600 miles for first service. Any ideas why they are not consistent?

Ask me one on sport lol. The handbook is translated to swedish and for some reason known only to honda, it clearly states 800 kms which is 500 miles. No idea why it's different. In the UK also it's 500 miles so must be a european thing, but i've no idea why there are differences. As far as i know these bikes are mostly the same these days.

I read he same thing, it made sense to me, and the testing of a couple of bike showed that the ones riden hard produced more horsepower and the rings sealed better.

I rode mine like I normally do off the dealer floor. Put a 100 miles on it, changed the oil, then took it out the next day and flogged the shit out of it. I must have bounced off the rev limiter 6 or 7 times.

    That's what I did with my R1.
Rode the pizzle out of it the moment it first touched pavement.
It made top 2% numbers on the dyno...

This is probably the best course of action for most people tho'.

Ride it "firmly" until fully warm, then ride it hard, avoid VTEC & redline.
Accelerate as hard as (safely) possible - you really do need to seat the rings immediately for best cylinder sealing.
DO NOT LET IT GET HOT.

Typical street riding, even very hard street riding, will allow appropriate periods of "rest" for the engine.

Change the oil & FILTER at about 300-500 miles (sooner is better).
Change again at about 1000 miles.
Ride it into the sunset secure in the knowledge that your engine is well broken-in and making about as much hp as it's ever going to.

If anything is going to fail from this process, it will almost certainly do so well within the Warranty period.

    Very nice! Bwahahaha!!
