Im Purchasing A Slip On Exhaust For My 1999 Vfr And Was Wondering If I Could Just Do It Myself, Or Is There Anything Special That Needs To Be Done.

Or Should I Just Let My Mechanic Do It...

You can do it with ease as long as you have a few hand tools. The tools will depend on the system you get but installation is as basic as it gets.

You might also want to have a tube of Permatex High-Temp Ultra Copper RTV Silicone on hand.

    High Temp Sealent

How important is it to use that sealent? I was down at the local shop trying to buy some, and the mechanic there suggested I put my high-mount Micron exhaust on without the sealent.

For most exhausts it's not necessary. Only certain manufacturers recommend it.

You can always call and ask them my guess is you probably won't need it. I've installed quite a few and have never used it. I do know that there are few manufacturers that recommend it but I have not installed any of their pipes.

Sealant is require when you are joining dissimilar metals together. When dissimilar metals are brought together it causes a cathoic reaction the cause galvanic corrosion. The speed of galvanic corrosion can be accelrated if you live near a salty environment or the area where metals are joined are not kept clean. Manufacturers that use titanium will often persribe the use of sealant.

If you are not sure, it doesn't hurt to use sealant whether it needs it or not, then go ahead. The only problem on using sealant is that it can tend to look meesy if not done right. Also be sure to use the right kind of sealant. Some will actually bond metals togeher if heated high enough. That can make it a real pain in the @$$ on removal your exhaust.

    Hope this helps.

    Didn't Use Sealent

I just put a new Micron high mount on my bike last weekend. The local motorcycle mechanic suggested that I not use the sealent, I guess he never does. So, I just tightened everything up to the appropriate torque settings, and haven't had any leaks. I understand that it is pretty messy dealing with that stuff, so I would reccommend not using it. Good luck.
