1992 VFR exhaust uprade

Gen 3 to Gen 4 header
I am getting ready to instal the headers on the bike so I can get a newer Two brothers pipes or whatever I may fancy.
How much trouble is this going to be?
It seems from what I have read, the shock may have to come out.
Special Tools?
It looks like it may be an 8 hour job. Is that about right?

Trouble, well some.

Yes, removal of the shock is a good idea, with all the pipes and tubes running around. otherwise, its a bolt-on, but you'll need 4th gen slip-ons.

While you're there, get rid of the emissions junk and blank off the ports.

Might as well as upgrade your shock too.

I have read very little about removal of the cannister.
What port gets plugged and which one remains open?
A two bro high pipe is coming on a sleigh and the 4th gen pipes are mounted.
I am little disappointed the C5 is no longer available. Had to go with a M3 (smaller one) with a different end cap. It should still be nice ....I can't wait !
The shock will have to wait for now.

LOL boy o boy when i did the shock swap I was looking into that cavity where the exhaust plumping goes, Just nuts to get to where the rear ports are, be easier to remove the swing arm, could be what one needs to do too? , Wow! not a job I care to tackle. Good luck

 

I just had my stock exhaust off for repainting, and all I removed was the rear wheel and centerstand. Once the wheel is outta the way, it's not that difficult to get in there.

I'm doing this same upgrade but having some trouble,for the first time on EBay for me the 4th gen pipe i won on Nov 29 hasn't been delivered yet,no tracking number,was supposidly shipped but no idea when or how,time will tell.Back to the point,how hard were the rear cyl head bolts to get at and come out,was a torch needed for a little heat?

 

I have found the replacement really quite easy. The pipes are 4 separate pieces. The rear double pipe set, the two front pipes and the main header assembly. I left all the pipes in place and replaced only the main header. All the pipes are the same. I had to tap the old assembly off with a hammer. I also used the hammer (carefully) to tap the 4th gen header in place. To get access to the rear, all I had to do was remove seat, footpeg/brake assy and tire. With a long extension, the 3 nuts can be reached to loosen the header from the rear pipes.

Well, the Two Bros muffler is installed. It sounds great. A ride around the block indicates faster revs and smooth acceleration. I have a leak at the swivel mount that I will fix later. Installation was easy. This may be the last option for older VFR owners. 94-97 Slip on oval M5 Standard mount. I wanted the high mount, but I don't think they are available anymore. Pics to follow soon.

I went for a test ride on New Year Day just before the Rose bowl "USC does it again" The pull from 8-10000 RPM is much stronger. However, the bike was hard to start as it was flooding out. I was quite worried about having to re-jet. I had also removed the EVAP cannister and plugged the lines as someone had said to do. I removed plugs and the bike seems to start right up again. What do I do with the lines? Leave them open?

Hey Sierra, I'm underway here I think. Thanks for the info thus far. Am I safe to assume that any stock header assy from 94-97 will work out for me and my '93? I've got to make some calls tomorrow to see if I am going to be able to get my hands on the Two Brothers can but you've given me hope!

bought a 1990 vfr400 about 3 months ago, sent it in for service about a week ago but it also had a light dent in the front rim cos of me being inlove while riding nd didnt notice half a brick in the road..bummerhttp://vfrworld.com/photos/data/743/kat.gif

i`ll post some pics soon. the bike is metaalic black custom painted, anyhow the main reason why im posting this is because i want some info on fitting cone airfilters..

Sorry I missed the post til now. Any header from the new bikes will work. It makes it much easier to fit a decent muffler.
Now I am preparing for fork oil and spark plug replacement. And at least a seat cover. Sport Skinz seems the way to go. 22K on her now and going strong.
