Is the gas tank the same size for a 1984 VF1000 and a 1985 VF500?

You might want to clarify a little bit:

Are we talking capacity or physical dimensions?

My WAG is NO on both counts.

Highly unlikely. Not to say you can't make just about anything fit, given some shade-tree-know-how and a big enough hammer.

I'm wanting to put a tank cover on my 85 vf500 gas tank. I cant find one. I did however find a cover for a 1984 vf1000.

shape is about the same....might work. Might depend on how much of a purist you are about things fitting "perfectly". By my experience, most aftermarket stuff doesn't fit for beans on the model its advertised to fit. My two cents.
