    Hi,

My name is Eric. I picked up a 2003 interceptor w/ 10k on it in November 07. I picked the vfr because I drove my CBR600 F4I from Phoenix to San Francisco nonstop and back (a different day) from Napa valley to Phx. That trip was 800 miles and my average speed was 80 miles per hour(800 miles) and took 10 hours. The fuel consumption was about 100 miles per tank.

That being said, I decided to test out the VFR for these semi-short/long road trips. So far I like it. Top speed so far was 140 with my hard bags attached and there was plenty left.

To get to my point. I have put 2000 miles on it so far. a couple days ago I started it and got a slow start. When I drove about 10 feet it bogged a little then died. It took a few attempts to get it restarted but it did.

When I took off(partially warmed up) the Vtec did not engage at about 6000rpm like usual. it did not work for the next 5 miles. Now it seems to engage at aound 7000 rpm. it seems like it does move as quick as it did. Also it still does not engage sometimes when the bike is cool.

My dealers service manager was no help. He just said he has never heard of any Vtec issue.

Has anyone ever heard of an issue or have any pointers for me. I would really appreciate any input.

Also, I put 64k on my original 92 cbr 600 and just sold it last june with 5 other bikes. I take good care of my bikes and am a little perplexed about the Vtec issue(Just to qualify my experience).

    Thanks.

The VTEC will not engage until your engine temp reaches 65C/149F. As for the "slow" start, every once in while (like every 6 months) mine seems to idle on the low side. Usually I just turn it off and when I restart its cleared. One time the restart did not help, I just gave the idle adjust about a half turn and it was fine. Next day and I had to turn it back down a half turn.

According to the shop manual, VTEC will not engage unless the engine coolant is over 149F. It is not wise to rev an engine or put it under a high load anyway until both the coolant and oil have reached operating temperature. The ECU tries to protect the engine, and disabling VTEC is one of its measures.
