I attended a seminar held by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation today. There are changes coming to the courses, mostly to the Experienced Rider Course. It will be Experienced Sportbike Course & Experienced Anything Else Course. AMC has been pushing for this for quite some time & now they get thier wish. In fact, the USAF will be the first entity to apply the new ERC. I get certed to teach it the last week of March. KC-10 FE out... lane:
Now that is a course I would be interested in taking. The older "experienced rider course" had been rumored to be a bit elementary. I cant wait for the new course to be offered in my neck of the woods!
Until I get definite details, I feel it would be unwise to give any specifics. I will say this, decreasing radius turns encouraging removal of excess footpeg material are a distinct possibility. KC-10 FE out... lane:
KC, are they going to hold this at larger size ranges? Higher speeds would certainly be beneficial. Bob (retired MSF Chief Instructor)
They did say there were new range markings for this course but I didn't ask if it was on a bigger range. That would have been a very wise question to ask & I'm now pissed I didn't think to ask it. KC-10 FE out... lane:
KC: We goofed around with a couple of the exercises that were supposed to go into thi sportbike course a year ago or so...the focus was not on controlling your motorcycle at slow speeds around cones. It was pretty awesome. If a person doesn't know the basics, they won't have fun. The exercises assume you know how to control a bike. There are no explanations like in the ERC. Should be cool! BZ
Another interesting tidbit from the upcoming ERC II Instructor course I'm attending on Monday. Part of this course will be instructing/assisting riders on setting up the suspension of their bikes. In fact, the riders will be required to bring whatever tools necessary for such adjustments. This make SOOOO much sense I wonder why it's never been taught before. The Instructor who is conducting this course emailed us today & said rain or shine, we're riding. I believe the exact words he used were, "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." http://www.weather.com/weather/exte...yahoo.com&cm_pla=forecastpage&cm_ite=CityPage KC-10 FE out... lane:
The answers in the question KC...because it makes sence! That's why nobody teaches it! When I was show how to set up basic sag I was thinking, that was easy, why the hell isn't that taught. Then I figurerd it out! Most people just don't know what to do because nobody has taught them! I didn't understand until I was shown no matter how many articles I read. My good friend Jeff (and fello rider coach) have debated on wether we should assist some students, who already have their MC license and bike, if we should show them basic sag set up. I already take a few minutes to show students how to use a center stand properly since that's not taught or described in any MC manual. Hell, we get questions about that on this site. Keep us posted on the class! BZ
I must make a public apology. I was mistakenly of the belief that the course I started today was the Motorcycle Safety Foundation ERCII. This is not correct. The course I am attending is the Air Mobility Command Advanced Sportbike Course. I'm sure some things are the same but the two are entirely unrelated. When I signed up for this, the people in the KWRI Wing Safety Office naturally thought this was a MSF product & told me as much. I apologize for any misreprensentation this may have caused. I don't want anyone officially affiliated with the MSF to feel I've mislead anyone. I will say this, after Day 1, this course FREAKING ROCKS!!! We are actually teaching/encouraging/insisting that you get your butt off the seat & hang off the bike in turns. I am shocked how far you can lean a bike at 25MPH. I actually went past the edge of the rear contact patch but was able to recover. Our instructor (a friend & former co-worker I've know for 6 years) came right out & said if we're not scaring ourselves in this class, we're not trying hard enough. One guy actually went down today. It was his own fault & he knows what he did wrong. I am a bit of a disadvantage with this course. I am the only one not a true super sport. My bike has at least 80lbs on the next smallest bike. I had a slight advantage today in the rain since I have tires more suited to the rain. I actually feel like I've been beat up after today. Only 5 more to go. KC-10 FE out... lane:
Either through MSF or the Military- THIS STYLE OF COURSE IS LONG OVER DUE! Anyway could you PM me the instructor's contact information, or for whoever is on charge of the program?? Maybe once they hear about this program they can finally see the reality of the situation- this training is paramount to all the sportbike riders in the military. Thanks in Advance! P.S.- keep us posted!!!!:ear:
My last ERC was in 2000, so I'm long overdue. I hope some of the changes mentioned above will be included in a new ERC, as I'm sure I could benefit. Love the idea of bike suspension set-up being part of the course. I'm hoping to take a Parks Total Control course, unless something else comes along offering similar instruction.
Get your fat ass off that seat boy!! LOL! Yeah, dragging a new at 30 mph is fun...nice and relaxing! And don't let the weight of your VFR hold you back KC. Once you start to get hanging off down, you'll want to do the suspension upgrades! But first you need to join us at Thunderbolt for some track time:smile: BZ
The guy is a Reservist now. He gets paid by the USAF to teach these classes around the Military. He gets paid for mileage and fuel costs. I know for a fact he taught out at Travis AFB not to long ago so Lemoore shouldn't be that much of a stretch. How far are you from Laguna Seca or Willow? That might make his trip a little more worth while. I'll ask him tomorrow if he's willing. I'm thinking the MSF ERCII will be very similar with the exception of the hanging off the seat part. I'M NOT FAT I'M BIG BONED!!! Oh yeah, me want Ohlins suspension. KC-10 FE out... lane:
