My brother and his wife were run over by aDrunk driver last night

Nailer sorry to hear of this horrible episode.

I lost my brother (former cop) and his wife to a damn drunk driver.

The bastard ended up serving only a total of 3 years behind bars for two lives.

Our DUI laws in the US are a total joke. When you feel better I would recommend that you become
very proactive in helping to nail this turd.

We need to beef up our DUI laws so that nobody will ever consider getting behind a wheel if impaired.

1st offense: Lose your car and spend 5 mandatory years in jail.

2nd offense: 15 years mandatory jail time.

3rd offense: Life behind bars, with no probation.

If you kill someone when drunk....minimum 20 years in the gray-bar hotel!

 

Our prayers go out to all involved. What a sad situation.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. My families thought are with you. I have learned my lessons in life. I don't drink because I don't know when to stop, and become quite irrational when I do, so for me the best policy is to just not start. I'll limit myself to 2-4 beers MAXIMUM. My motorcycle is also a very good deterrent. I have also seen what happened to my Dad when he got hit with a DUI, he fought it and won, but it still cost alot of time and $$$. Again, I am so sorry to hear about this.

Wow. I cringe to think of being in this situation. I will mention you and yours in my prayers and I wish you all a speedy recovery. Modern medicine is an amazing thing. It is almost able to keep up with modern stupidity... almost.

I am very glad to hear that they caught the guy. Please keep us posted with developments, my heart breaks for your tragedy.

I'm not a praying guy, but my thoughts are definitely for your brother and his wife. Modern medicine will work wonders for fixing her up. Also, I'd like to remind everyone to keep the third person involved in this accident in their thoughts and prayers, too.

I hope that they guy who did this is prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and that your brother and his wife go after him for everything he owns. No excuses for this sort of behavior - he needs to be locked up and beaten routinely.

I have absolutely no respect for anyone who drinks and drives. I feel the same way as most people on here that if you are caught, the penalty should be more severe. If you are caught again, you don't drive, period. If you cannot own up to the responsibilities of driving or drinking, you shouldn't be allowed to do either. The problem is, that the DUI offender can often go to another state to get another license to lose. I have an uncle-in-law who has done this several times, and has lost his right to drive in three states.

I will NOT ride my bike if I've had anything to drink in the past hour, and will only drive a car if I have had a lot to eat along with my drink(s). Some people have no idea what their limits are, and no self-control. These are the people who get into wrecks and kill/maim others.

Vermont is currently considering dropping the legal limit from 0.08 to 0.05 BAC. I don't think that this is necessarily the right move, as it will prosecute people who have had one or two drinks and are still within their abilities to pilot a car (two beers after work will certainly flunk someone in this instance). The focus needs to be moved to prosecuting those who routinely violate the DUI laws, before they hurt anyone. Repeat offenders need to not be on the roads, period. 2nd offense = no more license.

The local paper prints off the court appearances (not much else newsworthy in Vermont, I guess), and Id irks me to no end to see something like this:

Joe Schmo, 33, Burlington. DWI, 4th offense. Pleaded not-guilty. Fined $300, 90 days probation. DLS, 5th offense. Pleaded not-guilty. Fined $250, assigned court diversion program.

Why is this person not chained to a post somewhere?

So sorry about the accident hearing these kind of news just turns my stomach upside down my prayers to you and your family....I hope they throw the book at the @#!* driver and let him rot in jail....

 

I will keep you and your wife in my prayers along with the third rider, it is all our greatest fear when riding that something comes out of nowhere to ruin you forever. Definatley keep us updated here and if there is anything we can do to help speak up dont hesitate to ask.
