After loosing a battle in a corner to a 50mph gust of wind, I laid down my '02 and managed to seriously bend the left front fork; the right one is bent slightly, I believe. Thus I am in need of new forks. I have heard of people replacing their forks with GSX-R forks, as they are adjustable. The VFR's are 43mm; don't know what the GSX-R are. I imagine that would also require new clamps (possibly), but most likely new brakes, axle and possibly wheel. I would really like to replace as little as possible. Any help on this issue would be immnesly appreciated.

Don't forget the steering head bearings. After a hit hard enough to bend the forks, the steering head bearings took one he!! of a hit!! As bad as I hate to say it, Please, check the frame around the steering head for cracked paint, which would be a sure sign of a bent frame:frusty: . I hope the forks were the weak link, but they are pretty strong and sometimes take other things with them. No matter how the steering feels, be sure to replace the bearings, and races, and check the steering stem for damage. Don't ask how I know all this (it is a looong story and makes me cry:yell:) Good Luck!!!

Thanks for all of the info. I will be sure to check the steering head.

Wondering; ever hear of anyone swapping out their VFR forks for 929/954 forks? Going to call the local experts in the morning. From schematics off of bikebandit.com, unfortunately, it does not look like the calipers, though both Nissen, will mount up. I cant exactly tell the bolt pattern however the calipers are definitely different; dual piston on the CBR [945] vice triple piston.

Know of any bikes '02+ that use the same calipers on a 43mm fork?

I have heard of a few guys that have swapped out RC51 forks in place of stock. If you go down that road, youll need of course triple trees RC on the lower and a 929 upper. Then all the other gear - clip ons, brake calipers, master cylinder, custom brake lines, different wheel and rotors, fender.
A bunch of stuff. You should do your homework if you want to go that way.

A second option is to use F4i lower fork legs in stock VFR800 upper tubes. Then you can use stock clip-ons with stock triple trees, still need brake calipers and gear, and also keep the stock wheel /rotors.

I have gone thru a bit of this and the best bet for the moment is to step back and figure out how much you want to do and bucks to spend.

If you go the different fork route, then remember you are basically doing a brake delink job too. You will need to take care of the rear brake - tie the rear pistons to work together and go to a 14mm master cylinder. Google--- VFR800 Brake delink. My story on my ride will come up. Its a good prep for a new fork job too.

Then if you wanted to stay low buck, you could always buy stock off ebay.......

    Good luck,
    MD
