I just purchased a 1999 VFR and enjoy the ride! I have heard VFR's on youtube and read about the "soft" whine of the V4 engine. My VFR has a very loud whine! My riding buddy said he could hear my bike whine at the entrance of his neighbor hood which is about 1/4 mile from his house? Is there something I can check? I am worried there may be something wrong?
    Thanks,
    David

I asked almost the exact same question when I first got my VFR. I really didn't know that much about them. I actually started a thread with the exact same title as yours about a week ago. Check it out: http://vfrworld.com/forums/mechanics-garage/13306-gear-driven-cams.html?highlight=gear+driven+cams

Welcome to the forum David. Congrats on the new purchase.

I would have to hear it in person to be able to discern how loud the gear noise is. Maybe your friend just has exceptional hearing and/or you guys are just not used to the sound of gear driven cams. The cam gears in the 5th gens usually last forever and ever. It would be much more common for your tranny to go out first....speaking of trannies.....does this sound emanate in all gears? Does it make this sound in neutral as well?

It's alot easier to appreciate the sound if you were ever into hotrods and have heard a Pete Jackson gear drive in a car and seen the performance.

first of all welcome to the site, as far as your noise, hard to tell without hearing it but the noise can easily be heard over the exhaust sound if that helps. i personally wouldn't call it a "soft" whine, but a "whatch out here i come" whine. it even sounds better when u get up around 8-9,000 rpm on accel.:vtr2:
