I will not listen to music.... My VFR Sounds to purdy to not listen to it....

However, Where I work there is a large contingent of Bike riders... Not all sport and not all harleys a good mix of all versions of 2 wheels.

We had a guy who I used to park next to all the time... He Started to show me his Speakers and I-Pod holder he had mounted... Even had a remote switches for hitting next and previous... I was polite and asked if he did not think playing with music while ridding was not such a hot idea....

2 weeks later another rider at work was telling me ho this co-worker was constantly complaining about all these close calls he has been getting into lately.....

3 weeeks later..... Coworker is in th hospital in a coma for 3 days.. He got very lucky... He woke up 3 days later with a monster headache, a broken wrist, a broken collar bone, a slipped disk in his neck, a broken ankle, and no memory of his crash...

He only rembers getting onto the highway and thinking the song playing was to mellow...... That is the ast he remebers.... Where he crashed is notorious for the highway "Checking up" and sudden slow downs... He rode his bike pat and side swipped an 18wheeler and according to witnesses was inches from gtting run over by the rear wheels of the 18 wheeler...

Luckily he wears leathers but he only wore a half helmet....

Was he fiddling with his music? He's not sure... Did the music distract him? I'm not really sure...

But I am sure I personally will never listen to music that will drown out the beutiful sound of my VFR.....

I love these urban stories, full of myth and conjecture. They leave me with a cold sweat and a chill down my spine. I will amend my ways, I am afraid. In fact I better stop riding my bike all together because it is dangerous. I definitely will not drive my car, that is dangerous as well, in fact I am going to stay inside and stay away from anything that may hurt me for the rest of my life...you get the point.

Just having fun, actually that is kinda why I ride.

    See ya

    It's a true story.....

Look everyone, do what you want and what you are comfortable with I could care less really... The question was asked would I or would I not and why and hence, my answer...

Take it or leave it...If you're comfortable riding with music more power to you... I solute anyone's superior 733T mad Skillz at ridding that obviously I do not have because I will not listen to music while I ride....

Hmmm Peeking outside...there is still 12" of snow on the grass and it's 50 degrees... I'm considering getting my bike into the Honda Dealor for my recal work.... and 6000 mile check-up...

    Is it spring yet?

    Hey JoelieC,
I think your story was one of the most important elements in this thread. I think there is a lot of food for thought there. Paying attention is required when riding or driving. We lost a woman and a baby a few years back here in Tucson cause the kid was changing a CD in his car and mowed them down as they walked 10 feet to the side of the road.

Alexi, I think, is just trying to stir the soup and get a laugh.

Dammit Nungboy worked me out! Am I that transparent?

Seriously though, I sometimes do listen to music when I ride, with my iPod on shuffle. I have found that the most important safety element is between my ears, it has nothing to do with my riding skill or my choice of listening to music or not. It is simply my ability to make a decision not to ride to fast for the conditions and to be aware of what the traffic is doing around me at all times. I create my own safety or not when I ride and this is my choice and I live or not by the consequences. Fate though plays a part, last year I hit a Kangaroo while doing the speed limit early one morning on the way back from work. It was not pretty, but I had on all the right gear and was lucky...or I wasn't that unlucky depending how you look at it.

Morale of the story, stuff happens. But I don't hide from life because of it.

    There had my rant.

...and no, in case you were wondering, I was not listening to music at the time.

I'm still relatively new to sport-bikes, so I'll just concentrate on learning proper technique and safety precautions. I might sound like a party-pooper, but around here it's not if someone drops their new bike, it's when. I'm really trying not to be that guy. It's kind of a tasteless joke where I work, but people call motorcycles "donor-cycles." I don't know if you guys have ever heard that one...I hadn't before I got here. Anyway, just trying to shut the non-riders up by avoiding any mishaps.

Hey Alexi...I think you may be thinking of music as distraction in a different aspect than I was thinking. You can live your life however you choose to. If you want to listen to music, we all know that you will do so. Live your life as you want to. I am not telling you how to live yours. Only my opinion and what I believe.

I think of it this way...would I rather have sensory perception with one eye, or two? Would I be better with two eyes, and deaf, or two eyes and have healthy hearing? I am talking more of in heavy, congested, city traffic. I never said that your eyes are not the most invaluable sense you have on a bike...however, you already have your greatest asset...your eyes working for you...and it would make it even better (IMO) if I can also as an additional sense hear somebody yelling, a bicyclist calling out left, car tires screeching, an ambulance/police siren, or whatever the noise/danger when I am sitting at a light as well. You can think however you like and listen to your IPOD in the city (that is what I am mainly talking about, low speed congested/busy city driving where the wind noise is low, and/or traffic is high) as much as you want, but to me personally, I would rather have ALL of my senses working for me when I am surrounded by cars, trucks, buses, bicyclists, pedestrians, and so on in heavily congested areas, or even neighborhoods where kids are playing and such.

Don't think of me as saying your ears are MORE important than your eyes, only that your sight PLUS your hearing is always going to be better than your sight only.

never mind.. you can really only discuss motorcycling with other bikers.. everyone else tells you, you are gonna die

Alexi---the soup is not any good unless it gets stirred sometimes! We all do our part...

"Donor-cycle" yes, the original oh-so-clever term for riders. And I agree...talk to other cyclists to have a real discussuion. Non-riders cannot quite "get it."

    Hearing Loss is cumulative...

I always wear ear plugs but I also listen to my XM Radio. I can hear the music just fine with the ear plugs in. The plugs block out a different frequency, i.e. Wind Noise.

I tell ya, after this past weekend's long journey, I do want some music for the "open" road. I was signing "all I wanna do, is have some fun" half the way up there!

I think we are all missing the inportant fact as I found out last weekend when Derstuka was picking my bike out of the Sand Lot ....

The added benefit to riding with MP3 player strapped to your fore arm makes a great forearm slider :brick: :clap2:

A couple of times maybe for gas off of Santo road and the 52, but not often. I would usually just be passing thru Tierrasanta area on the 52 on my way to the mtns.

Hmm, you avy pic reminded me of a bike/rider I see every so often coming up Tierrasanta blvd. Then again, since Murphy Canyon has military housing, everyone and their mother rides a bike.

Eheh, if you see a VF500 missing the right mirror, that's me on mine

I actually live right across the street from the high school.

Yeah bri-guy...that IPOD helped save your hide alright...maybe you should strap one to each arm and leg, and your arse! haha

Yeah, must have been some other rider. I am a poseur and I usually just polish my bike in my leathers and talk about riding. Works great for picking up chicks!

I usually don't pick fights, but Ghost - you hit one of my button combos...
US bases require(d?) motorcycles where an orange reflective construction vest when you ride on base, is that good for me too?

My point - Just because it is a policy does not mean it is a good one for everyone all the time.

    ---- side note ----
I've started shoving my old iPod down my pants when I ride for protection.... good thing I've never fallen for the iPod nano... I have ye olde bricke style.

that must have been a sight to see!

Jason nodding his head, Roxy Style, to the beat as he rode sitting straight up with the cruise control on.... "...peeling the label of his bottles of Bud..." doing American Sign Language to Cheryl Crow's song... and the traffic thinking,"why is that deaf guy so into his music?".

the other half of the trip Derstuka signed,"I'm so Ronery" by Kim Jong Il as his hands and fingers drifted softly through the breeze up Interstate 5. <--(I made this part up as a joke)

Senior Humor Editor Nozzle at your service

    Hey Brian,

    Questions, questions....

What kinda/brand of MP3 player is that, and where did you get the wrap around arm mount? Oh, and where did you get your ear pieces? Do they drown out the wind noise pretty well?

Dayyyyyum, it is like I just interrogated you something fierce!
