I recently purchased an '04 VFR. It was seriously damaged, and the owner before me had rebuilt it, mostly with used parts. I've just recently been putting it through its paces, and have found that it goes on reserve (well, the LCD display starts to flash red on the last bar) at about 4.1 gallons.

My understanding was that the '02 and later bikes have a 5.8 gallon tank, and the LCD should start to flash with 0.9 gallons left. Is it possible that the prior owner put one of the older 5 gallon tanks on the bike? The tank is silver, which I believe is an '05 color, but I don't know what other years might have that color as well.

    Any suggestions?

    well..

I don't know about the capacities, since you aren't speaking about real Gallons  ..normally they hold around 21 litres but there's no chance the bike has an earlier tank on it - they are a different shape. ( I know almost anything can be made to fit..)

    Thanks -- and gallons

Thanks for the info on the tank. Yes, my main question was if an older tank would fit on the newer models. There is a suspicious gap of about a half inch between the seat and the tank, but otherwise it doesn't look like a force-fit, and the seat is a Corbin anyway.

By the way, the gallons thing is always mystifying to me. 22 liters, which is what Honda claims for these tanks, is 5.81 US gallons, but 4.84 UK gallons. In the US, we STILL refer to our units system as "The English System," despite the fact that only the US and the economic powerhouse of Liberia persist in using it. Truly, we are lame...

    Cheers, and thanks again.

I have an 04 vfr, and I think the most I've ever put into the tank was 5 gallons. Never tried running it down on reserve to see how big it really is.

my 04 is the exact same way. once the reserve bar starts to flash, i can usually only cram in about 4.0-4.2 gallons.
