All right, this is my first bike and maybe not so mechanically savy. I'm trying to install a K&N air filter on my 06. Wasn't sure which side should go up or down but seemed that it would only fit with mesh side down. The rubber area on the side, when fitted into the groove on the box left more room between the top and bottom box cover than the original did. In addition, the instructions with the K&N filter said to remove the O-rings?? in the box cover??? Help, thanks.

There is an o-ring that goes around the edge of the airbox, providing a seal when the box is closed. I think th emesh side would go up, facing towards the tank. I cannot say for certain as I never put one in the vfr I had and I have yet to install mine in my R6s.

Vinny is right, there is a large o-ring in the groove around the edge of the cover of the air box. You may have to use a thin screwdriver or something to get it started out, but it really is there.

The K&N logo is molded on one side of the filter. That side goes up if I remember right. There should be a sheet of instructions that shows which way to install it.

mesh down, this is to provide support when the air is being pulled through it. You don't want the mesh support being on top, because it would pull down with air flow.

Yes mesh side down. I have a k&n on my 04. There's a thin rubber gasket that helped keep the original box, if you leave it in, the k&n sits up a hair, and the boxes top and bottom, don't seat together.

thanks. I figured it out. I was trying to do this in a dark garage with a small flashlight and didn't see it. Personally, they should rename the damn thing a grommet or gasket. I would think O-ring would imply a circle. Maybe something small. Anyway thanks.

I did notice the bike seems to have more low end torque now and also seems to run smoother in that VFR rough rpm area of 4000 - 5000.
