I tried a ‘down-turn’ end cap on the shorty and it worked pretty well. No increased undertail heat (over stock) and no noticeable fumes. I’m setting this one down now that I have proof of concept.

I slapped together a one-up that runs past the license plate on the left side and ends a couple of inches after the tail section. I hung it from where the stocker would bolt to. It works great and the sound/backpressure is totally tune-able. I currently have a 10” baffle in and it sounds awesome. I’ll take this in to a muffler shop and have them mandrel bend a 2” id, necked down to 48cm id on the cat end, and slash cut the other end. I’m no longer using steel wool (too small gauge) and will probably experiment with fiber glass and brillo pad gauge stainless steel.

I should be able to keep the shorty under $20 and the long one under $100.

During proof of concept and prototyping I’m not going to worry about looks. I just want to know if these ideas work. The huge under tail void isn’t pretty, but designing a functional engine component to simply take up space would be sad. Ideally I figure out how to make that space useful (removable ERK?), or make new rear plastics.

    Thanks for the encouragement!

kc to hear those leos is great at a stop light rev it up a bit 4-5 grand everyone knows your bike is a v-4 and the leos are way lighter then stock. i can not say they are fun to install but dam that sound was worth the cuts and scraps and rising blood pressure.....

If anyone else would like to give this a go, i'm about to shit-can a stock muffler assy. I can cutt off the "up pipe" or any portion of that set up if you want. Just pay me for shipping.

Canib: good on ya' for your efforts. I'd love to hear it, and look forward to seeing your finished product.
