The transmission on my vf700f is having problems in second gear...It shifts in just fine but the second I give it gas it falls out into neutral. The guy I bought it off of says this is a common problem, is that true? Either way Iam just wondering what exactly it is that causes that. So for the time being I have to skip second which can be a pain at times.

The gear gets rounded off from bad full-power shifts from 1st to 2nd. It is the longest "throw" in the transmission so it is missed most often.

Solution is to split the case and replace the worn parts. Usually undercutting is done to prevent this from occuring again.

The transmission can be replaced by going in from the bottom, but it is recommended only be done by V-4 experienced mechanics.

Usually, the recommendation is to find another engine without a 2nd gear problem and install it.

The repair and undercutting usually run 500 - 1200 if you do it yourself and do it right the first time. Undercutting is best left to a professional. A used engine is usually around 300 - 500.

    Yes,
this is a common problem on old VF series bikes but seldom happens on newer VFRs......
Maybe time to look for a newer bike??

The problem you describe can happen to any motorcycle with mileage, when the engagement dogs get rounded off the popping out of gear problem manifests itself. Undercutting the gears really helps to prevent this problem and makes for a better shifting transmission outright. Most bikers do not go to the trouble even if they know how. I have and will tell you it makes a world of difference. Here is the rub, you have an old bike and as stated the only way to repair the problem is to remove the motor, split the cases and replace the problem gears. You have to ask is it worth it? Only you can answer but if it was me I would not only do it, I would go all the way and under cut the gears also. These are the people how know what they are doing should you chose to undercut:

repairing this yourself is only for very experienced folks with the service manual and a good set of quality tools.

Look at he price of a new set of gears also, not cheap; if you have to pay a pro to fix it, may far exceed the market value of the bike.......

If the bike jumped out of gear when you bought it, why not just walk away?

Thanks for the advice guys. As for the why not walk away, like I said it was way to good of a deal. I could turn around and sell for a profit right now in a heartbeat. Iam not at all invested in this bike thus far (under $300). So really this is just a project I have my other bikes for daily driving and such. Just cant pass up a honda, they make too good of a bike!

If you're not too worried about it and don't want to make the investment in time and money, just ride it without using second gear and save up for a new engine a little at a time. Since you're in no hurry, you can wait until you find an engine for the price you want.

very true I have been considering that. I do drive it around already 1-3-4-5. Its not so bad, but second gear would really be nice
