So I chopped of that fender and so can u.It was very cheap cost me 1.61the biggest investment was the aluminum sheet from home depot ,and some 10mm bolts with nuts long enough to go through , close to an 1 inch it very easy

    1. I traced around the fender with a pen , then took the license plate off and the reflectors , then I carefully sawed off the fender following my trace line(be very carefull not to cut into the tailsection I pulled up on it to give me adequate cutting room

    2. And then I bent my brackett to my liking , try to get it positioned as far up as you can , and then I got my holes in my aluminum brackett sized right and bolted the license plate holder onto it(leave the license plate off till last so its not in the way , then get the top holes measured and drilled through the top black piece that you will be bolting it to(easier with the wheel off but I did it with the wheel on

3.hold the license plate up for test fit and make sure you have enough clearance beetween the wheel and license plate if you do then bolt her down and make sure the light is working ok and i bent mine in a little to give more clearance and voila your done.

You're going to buy a lot of license plates that way.

May I suggest that you do the usual for the rear.

    1. Cut plastic fender flush with rear tail. -----------

    2. Fab license plate from ss s/m and attach to the bottom fender so taillights iluminate plates.

    3. Same look, except plates are now well behind rear wheel.

I think what Safetypro is saying is that your rear tire is going to crunch that plate in that location every time you go over a sizable bump.

I believe him since when I put my fender eliminator on my 2005 VFR, I didn't like the way the Competition Werkes eliminator made the plate point so far towards the back of the bike. So I bent it down so it was more veritical. Not thinking about suspension compression. First bump I hit, I heard a crunch and sure enough the plate had a nice U from the tire impressed on it. I'm probably lucky I didn't cut the tire.

Your plate setup is even closer to the tire then mine was, so you should be careful to make sure you have enough clearance with the suspension fully compressed before riding agressively.

I may have to test that out to see if it hits , I have it at an angle so if the tire does goes up from a bump it will only push it instead of crunching it I made sure it wasnt vertical I could angle it even more to give more clearance , and make sure it can still be seen by any piggies behind me

I have an idea to get it up higher with some aftermarket led lights and doing away with the stock license plate light , should get it up 4 inches higher

I did a fender chop on my '96 as well. My cost was $0.00.

My plate is mounted JUST below the taillight. I used the stock bracket and cut the license plate lamp off of it. There is sufficient illumination from the taillight for the plate. I used the light wiring to run my R/R cooling fan.

The rear fender was removed about 98%, with the remaining 2% of it left behind to attach the chopped plate bracket to (through holes drilled in that 2%). All of the fender that is left over is hidden behind the bracket.

I never cared for the "plate hidden up in the wheel well" thing - I think that it attracts the attention of LEO's. Since my bike is "pull me over red" in the first place, I felt that relocating my plate to the wheel well was asking for trouble anyways. Plus, since the plate is so close to the tire, I imagine that the sandblasting it would recieve would quickly make the plate look like crap.

As far as plate interference, I'd mount the plate and jump up and down on the bike, trying to compress the rear suspension as much as possible while having a friend verify that the plate has adequate clearance.

I will post pics tonight or tomorrow of my chop, as I am quite proud of how it turned out.

Here's the pic. You can see the tiny amount of plastic that I left behind.

FWIW - Here's my chop. Just shorted and shaped the fender (to support the plate from wind) and used LED bolts for light.

oops but when the bad thunderstorms came through i was riding home at about 12:00 at night getting off work and some large branches fell in front of me so it was to sudden to swerve , so i had to revert to my old dirt bike off road days and jump them and the way my plate is angled it didnt crunch it it just pushed it since its a little flexible for that reason so it passed the bump test , I am still debating whether to move it back for LEO purposes but you can still see it very good from behind
