I had to read the first couple lines a few times before I realized you weren't referring to Kansas. I forgot you have your own abbreviations for Cali. But, your post did get me to thinking, no one has mentioned Kansas. Man what a boring state to drive. I hate it when I go home because I have to drive all the way across it. I think I'd go crazy living there.

You ever been to Danville, VA via route 58? My dad rented a plane, and flew home from Charleston, SC, and I met him in Danville. When we made it home to Ashland, KY (at the time) we got weathered in and had to drive back to Danville where my car was parked. (I had to return to Norfolk where I was stationed). Since then, I've always wanted to start an Iron Butt at one end of the Dragon, then on to Va Beach via 58, followed by the 500 mile treck back to KY via 64.

    Where I've lived and ridden.....

Western NY (Buffalo) - fair riding, short season. Head to the finger lakes and southtowns for good roads, or up to the mouth of the Niagara at Lake Ontario (US or Canada) for good scenery. The immediate areas of Bufflo and Niagara Falls are not good. Anyone living in an old industrial Great Lake city (Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo, Erie, etc.) will understand. If they disagree, they don't get out enough.

Central PA (State College) - Great backroad riding with a short season. Headed a couple times each season to SE PA/Maryland to cruise Amish territory. Good riding but those Amish strip clubs are terrible. WV trips were had too. Great scenery in WV, good rides, but sometimes the road conditions were worrysome. The tar and gravel practice on the backroads of PA will have you in leather or a 'stich in a heartbeat, if you have a brain.

Central Ohio (Columbus) - fair riding, short season. Head south for anything interesting. I kept it to commuting mostly when there. Can you say, "flat with large country blocks"? I thought you could. In all fairness, I traveled heavily with work and was only there for about 9 months, so I didn't give it a fair shake. That said, I still think it would stink. Did I mention it's flat and straight?

West Tennessee (Jackson) - I made about four trips seasonally to East Tennessee, NC and SC. Winter is hit or miss, if you get a mild one you can ride all year. I have to agree with those praising the east TN and west NC/SC areas. Some fantastic riding. Take the traffic away from the bay area in CA and you'd beat it, but I think this is the place I'd choose for a life + riding combination. As for west TN, fair. I usually ventured east or south so I can't say much about western KY or beyond the Old Man.

East Bay CA (Livermore) - Yes the expense and planning your life around traffic blows. The riding and season length are, however, fantastic. I've done a bunch of exploring between Redding and Monterey. Long season and roads that you can't ignore about everywhere. If it wasn't so damn expensive, this is the place to be for riding. Lane sharing should be allowed everywhere.

Eastern Kansas (Kansas City) - KC is a great town IMO with great resturaunts and nice people. That was to soften the blow for folks tied to it, because the riding sucks. To be fair, because the riding sucked so bad locally, I didn't venture out much. To the south it has to get better, I hope.

Salt Lake Valley (Draper) - Great place for riding. The season is reasonable in the valley, but shorter for the good stuff in the Wasatch mountains. Pick your place.... dessert, mountain canyon, small mountain community, ski resport, etc. Unfortunately my job kept me tied close and I didn't venture out much on the VFR. Anything outdoors....this is a great place to be. If I were to do it over again, I'd be happy as hell there with a different job and a supermoto.

Central Indiana (Indianapolis) - Fair in the immediate area, far better in the south where rolling hills and long sweepers are the norm. There isn't a lot of the tight turn stuff so it isn't nearly as good as the combination riding of California or the TN/SC/NC roads, but good enough.

Yeah, I was just going back over this reading all the old replies. You know, as i look at them, the thing that stands out to me is: Most people say I am only X hours from such and such great riding. But, I say, I am only minutes from X hours of year round twisty roads with little traffic. The politics in my town don't really seem to interfere in my life at all. My taxes are higher than anywhere I have lived, but my house is worth more than anywhere I have lived. Beer is cheaper here than back home in Missouri so I really can't complain, I make up the difference in taxes just in beer savings.
