Hey, BZ. Yep, and believe it or not, must of mine were from bicycles too! I used to be rather fond of jumping Schwinn Stingrays off homemade ramps (in the street, of course; couldn't peddle fast enough in dirt clods to get decent height and distance...). Sometimes I just plain lost control, but most of the calamities occured when parts broke (handlebars, goosenecks, and even frames occasionally). I don't think my body was damage-free on elbows and/or knees for more than a month at a time, and there was at least one occasion where I landed on my knees, ripped through the Levi's, knees ground down and caught traction, and flipped me forward onto my elbows and forearms.

I could never understand why it bothered my parents so much. Apparantly, the joys of sailing through the air in the noble pursuit of wingless flight is a privelage reserved for few...

So if he had been wearing leathers, would he have gotten away without a scratch, or would he have "probably" gotten away without a scratch?

I always wear full leathers, boots, gloves and a full face helmet, fortunetly I have never put them to the test.

How much protection they really give?

Read this site for alot of info: http://www.roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/88.html

"a single layer of 1.4 mm cow hide will last 5.8 seconds, while 200 gsm denim (or your standard jeans), will last just over half (0.6) of a second"

If you are going over 30mph, you're probably going to slide for longer than .6 seconds.
